Five Deacons Score as Wake Routs Boston College, 6-2
11/1/2020 2:54:00 PM | Field Hockey
Freshman Grace Delmotte led the offense with two goals
Wake Forest (3-7, 2-4 ACC) scored its most goals in a game since Oct. 7, 2018 when it defeated Appalachian State 8-0.
"Our players had two choices today- to let Friday's defeat wreck them or to show resilience and bounce back," head coach Jen Averill said. "They definitely chose the latter of the two and had a great mindset. I was incredibly proud of the amount of attack we were able to generate today. Not necessarily in the score but certainly in our attacking presentation overall."
The Demon Deacon offense was on display as Wake Forest took a 3-0 lead in the first 30 minutes of action. Junior Nat Friedman opened scoring, notching her third goal of the season at the 10-minute mark to give the Demon Deacons an early 1-0 lead.
Anne van Hoof extended Wake's lead 2-0 with a penalty corner goal, a missile from the top of the circle, with assists from Meike Lanckohr and Alexis Grippo. Just two minutes later, Laia Vancells made a great pass to Lanckohr who found the back of the net for Wake's third goal of the half.
Boston College (0-2, 0-2 ACC) answered with a penalty corner goal in the 36th-minute to get on the board and cut Wake's lead to two, but Delmotte netted her first goal of the game in the 41st-minute on a pass from Abby Carpenter to put Wake on top 4-1.
The momentum continued for the Demon Deacons as junior Eleanor Winants found her way past the keeper to score her first goal of the season. Grace Sambrook earned her first assist of the year on the play.
The Eagles tacked on another goal, but Delmotte sealed the Wake Forest victory with her second goal of the day with eight minutes remaining on the clock. She led the offensive attack for Wake Forest with four shots. Van Hoof, Winants and Friedman all added three shots.
Ally Butler made the start in the net not conceding a goal in the first half. Tori Glaister entered the game in the second half and had the best game of her career, collecting six saves after facing 13 shots to keep the Eagles at bay.
Up next, Wake Forest will make the short trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., on Thursday for the ACC Championships. The Demon Deacons earned the fifth seed in the event and will face four-seed Virginia on Thursday at 2 p.m. The 2020 ACC Field Hockey Championship will not be open to the public, but ACC Network will carry all tournament action live.
