Field Hockey Closes 2020 Season at ACC Championships

11/5/2020 4:11:00 PM | Field Hockey

Senior Alexis Grippo scored for the Demon Deacons

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 5 Wake Forest Field Hockey dropped its quarterfinal matchup against No. 4 Virginia 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Karen Shelton Stadium. The loss ends the Deacons' 2020 season, but Wake Forest will be back in action fighting for a bid to the NCAA Tournament in the spring.

"Our press let us down today," head coach Jen Averill said. "We had some opportunities earlier in the game but failed to capitalize. We are very grateful that we were able to compete and get this far this fall. We look forward to the spring when we will hopefully once again be given an opportunity to continue to build upon the style and success that we showed during moments of the fall."

Virginia (3-7, 2-3 ACC) opened scoring in the seventh minute with a penalty corner goal from Laura Janssen to take a 1-0 lead, a score that stood until the third quarter.

Wake Forest (3-8, 2-4 ACC) was awarded a penalty corner in the 37th-minute. The Deacs couldn't convert the goal but drew a foul against Virginia to set up a penalty stroke. Alexis Grippo took the shot, sending the ball over the keeper's head into the corner of the cage to even the score 1-1. It was the senior's first goal of the season.

The Cavaliers answered back early in the fourth quarter with a penalty corner deflection as Janssen notched her second goal of the game. The goal was originally called off, but after video review, the score stood to hand Virginia the 2-1 lead that proved to be the game-winner.

Olivia Corthals made a huge defensive save for the Deacs early, her first defensive save of the season, to keep the Cavaliers at bay. Grace Delmotte and Eleanor Winants led the offensive attack with two shots each, while five other Deacs got a shot off.

More information on the 2021 spring season will be released at a later time.
