CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball extended its winning streak to three games on Thursday night, capturing a 78-75 victory over Charlotte in Dale F. Halton Arena.

Senior guard Gina Conti helped secure the Deacs (3-1) road victory by knocking down all six of her free throw attempts down the stretch. The 49ers (0-3) fouled the Grove City, Ohio three times with less than 16 seconds remaining in the game and she salted the game away.

She finished a perfect 9-for-9 from the line during the game and on the season remains a perfect 21-of-21 from the charity stripe. Conti ended the game with 23 points including going 7of-12 from the field.

After picking up two fouls in the first quarter, fellow senior Ivana Raca sat for much of the second quarter.

The Belgrade, Serbia native made the most of the third quarter, netting 11 of her game-high 24 points in the quarter, helping the Deacs to a 62-57 lead after 30 minutes.

In the fourth Wake Forest built up its lead to as much as 10 points with 4:46 left on the clock.

Charlotte came back, cutting the Demon Deacon lead down to one point with less than 30 seconds remaining before Conti closed it out.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Deacs were able to push the pace early in the game, helping them jump out to an early 10-6 at the under-five timeout of the first quarter. At that point, Ivana Raca had picked up her second foul in the game.
• Wake Forest led for the majority of the first quarter before a late run by 49ers put them in front, 22-20 after 10 minutes of play.
• With Raca in foul trouble, fellow senior Gina Conti filled into her scoring role. Conti helped put the Demon Deacons back in front with a personal 5-0 run. It helped put the Deacs back in front 33-30 at the 4:55 mark of the second quarter.
• By halftime, the Demon Deacons held on to a 41-37 lead. With two fouls, Raca was able to still be effective on the offensive side of the floor. She finished the half with nine points while Conti had a game-high 13 at the midway point.
• The Demon Deacons maintained the lead through much of the third with Raca netting 11 points in the third quarter alone. Entering the final 10 minutes of action, Wake Forest led 62-57 while shooting better than 50 percent from the field.
• With 4:46 remaining in the game, Christina Morra knocked down a pair of free throws to push the Deacs lead to 70-60, the largest of the game by either team.
• The 49ers worked their way back into the game over the next four minutes, going on a 10-2 run to make it a 72-70 game with 34 seconds left in the game. With the ball in the Deacs hands, Conti hit a pair of clutch free throws to extend the lead to four points with 16 seconds left.
• After answers from Charlotte, Conti hit four more free throws to seal a 78-75 victory at Charlotte. The senior finished a perfect 9-for-9 at the line while the team was 21-of-25 at the stripe.

FROM HOOVER
"I give Charlotte a lot of credit. We knew that this was going to be a battle especially with it being on the road. I am proud of the way our girls have risen to the challenge with four tough games to start the season. Gina Conti was huge for us there at the end, knocking down all her free throws to close it out. I cannot wait to get back home and play in our own gym against North Carolina on Thursday. We know it will be another tough test especially with it being the ACC opener." Jen Hoover
