Demon Deacons Ready for Home and ACC Opener

Wake Forest is scheduled to face in-state rival North Carolina to open the 20-game Atlantic Coast Conference slate.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team is set to open up the 2020-21 home and Atlantic Coast Conference slate Thursday night in Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum
 
The Demon Deacons (3-1, 0-0 ACC) are riding a three-game winning streak including most recently a 78-75 victory at Charlotte. Ivana Raca and Gina Conti combined for 47 of the Wake Forest points and both now rank in the top-10 in the ACC in scoring average.
 
The Tar Heels (5-0, 0-0 ACC) last game also came against the 49ers, capturing an 81-75 win in Chapel Hill. It marked the first time North Carolina had been held under 90 points this season. The Tar Heels have seven players averaging 9.4 points or better this season with five averaging double-figure points.

Tipoff for Thursday night's game against North Carolina is scheduled for 6 p.m. (ET) in LJVM Coliseum. The game can also be seen on ACC Network.

AGAINST IN-STATE OPPONENTS
After a pair of wins against non-conference opponents Davidson and Charlotte during the opening games of the season, Wake Forest has improved to 10-3 versus all in-state opponents over the last two seasons.
 
This includes last season when the Deacs went 3-1 against Big 4 opponents with a pair of wins over North Carolina.
 
Gina Conti was clutch in the first meeting knocking down a game-tying three with three seconds left at LJVM Coliseum to send it to overtime where the Deacs won, 82-79.

  • The Demon Deacons improved to 10-3 against in-state opponents of the last two seasons as clutch free throw shooting from Gina Conti helped seal the win in the final seconds
    • Ivana Raca led the Deacs offensively with 24 points, improving her season average to 20.3 on the season, ranking second in the ACC. Conti added 23 points of her own including going a perfect 9-for-9 from the line.

Senior guard Gina Conti goes into Thursday ranked seventh, needing just three assists to move into sixth on the all-time list. Additionally, she needs just 121 assists to break the all-time program record.

Additionally, she is tied for fourth in program history in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.40).

Wake Forest returns to non-conference action on Sunday, playing host to Norfolk State. Tipoff is scheduled for noon at LJVM Coliseum.
