No. 19 Deacs Advance to Semifinals of Blue Gray Classic

Head coach Jeff Wyshner grabs career win No. 300 as a women's head coach
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 19 Wake Forest women's tennis team advanced to the semifinal round of the Blue Gray Tennis Classic on Friday after defeating SMU.
The Demon Deacons (7-1, 1-0 ACC) 4-1 victory over the Mustangs (7-2, 1-0 AAC) marked the 300th career victory in the women's game for head coach Jeff Wyshner. He has racked up 123 wins as the head coach at Wake Forest.
Overall, it is win No. 354 combined between the men's and women's game. From 2001-06, Wyshner served as the men's and women's head coach at Fairfield College.
Against SMU, doubles was not played due to a weather delay. In singles action, Wake Forest jumped out to an early 2-1 lead with straight-set victories from Saby Nihalani in the No. 3 spot and Alexis Franco in the No. 6 spot.
No. 29-ranked Carolyn Campana battled back from a set down to win in three sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-4). No. 79-ranked Eliza Omirou also had to go to three sets in her win over the Mustang's Zade (6-3, 3-6, 6-4).
Their wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 match helped the Deacs advance to the semifinals against No. 31 Auburn (7-1, 0-0 SEC).
In the semifinals, Wake Forest grabbed the doubles point over Tigers with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches.
In the top spot, No. 11-ranked pairing MC Meredith and Eliza Omirou squared off against No. 9-ranked Russo and Ovunc. Meredith and Omirou grabbed their first top-10 win of the spring and their 42nd win as a pairing.
With the win, the pairing is now tied for seventh in program history in wins.
The Demon Deacons will conclude their match against Auburn Saturday morning with singles play.
