Wake Forest jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but the Dirtbags retired the last 23 Deacon hitters in their comeback effort.
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- No. 18 Wake Forest jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but Long Beach State retired the last 23 hitters, coming from behind to defeat the Demon Deacons, 7-3, at Blair Field on Saturday evening.
The Deacs (3-3) got things started on the right foot, with Chris Lanzilli and William Simoneit tallying RBI singles in the opening frame. After the Dirtbags (4-2) got a run back in the bottom of the inning, Shane Muntz hit a solo homer to push the Deacons' lead to 3-1.
But LBSU starter Luis Ramirez retired each of the next 17 hitters he faced as LBSUÂ tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth and scored four runs in the seventh to take control. Ramirez finished with 12 strikeouts, no walks and three hits allowed over 7.0 innings. Dirtbag reliever Devereaux Harrison retired all six Deacons he faced in relief to close the game out.
Wake Forest starter Jared Shuster opened the game strong before running into trouble. He struck out five straight batters over the second and third innings, but LBSU recorded three hits in the fifth and five in the seventh. Shuster pitched 6.0+ innings, striking out eight but conceding six runs. Antonio Menendez allowed one run over his 2.0 innings in relief.
The series wraps up on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET.
