LONG BEACH, Calif. -- No. 18 Wake Forest dropped the series-opener to Long Beach State, 6-2, at Blair Field on Friday night.
Dirtbags (3-2) starting pitcher Alfredo Ruiz, the reigning National Pitcher of the Week, stifled the Demon Deacons' (3-2) offense over his 7.0 innings. He allowed no runs, conceding just two hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
The Deacs were doomed by free bases in the two innings LBSU scored.
In the first, a grounder was misplayed for an infield single and then the next batter walked, followed by a two-run triple by Leonard Jones.
Long Beach State added four runs in the fourth, thanks in part to three walks and an error. The only ball to leave the infield was a two-run single by Jacob Hughey which pushed the LBSU lead to 6-0.
The Deacs were able to get to the Dirtbag bullpen in the final two innings. William SImoneit hit an RBI double in the eighth. In the ninth, Chris Lanzilli and Bobby Seymour hit back-to-back doubles to plate another before LBSU finished off the game.
Wake Forest starter Ryan Cusick allowed six runs (two earned) on six hits and five walks in 6.0 innings with nine strikeouts.
Relievers Cole McNamee and Brennen Oxford combined to retire the last six Dirtbag hitters of the game.
Game two of the series is set for 6 p.m. ET on Saturday.
