Ryan Cusick tallied 11 strikeouts in the losing effort.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A three-run inning proved to be the difference as No. 3 Louisville came out on top of Wake Forest in a pitchers' duel in the ACC-opener, 4-1, at David F. Couch Ballpark on Friday night.
Ryan Cusick struck out 11 Cardinals (10-3, 1-0 ACC) over 5.0 innings, but Louisville starter Reid Detmers kept the Demon Deacons (8-6, 0-1 ACC) off the board over his 6.0 innings of work, as he struck out 15.
"Obviously we didn't fare very well against him. He's really good, give him credit. But we chased too many pitches out of the zone, flipped too many counts," head coach Tom Walter said. "We had a chance to get to him with [runners on] first and second and nobody out, and had the right guys up, third time through the order. We need to find a way to punch a run or two across right there...He's one of the best guys in the country for a reason."
Louisville plated three runs in the second inning thanks to a walk, stolen base, RBI single by Justin Lavey and RBI double from Jared Poland, followed by a run-scoring error.
Chris Lanzilli and Bobby Seymour singled to start the fourth inning but Detmers got out of it with two strikeouts and a foulout.
Lanzilli and Seymour tried to start another rally in the sixth with a single and walk, respectively. Detmers closed out his outing by recording back-to-back strikeouts to strand runners on the corners.
Both teams scored in the seventh, with Wake Forest's run coming when Derek Crum walked and scored on an error following a Michael Turconi single.
For Wake Forest out of the pen, Tyler Witt allowed one run over 2.0 innings, followed by scoreless innings by Cole McNamee and Bobby Hearn.
Adam Elliott allowed an unearned run in 2.0 innings, while Michael Kirian struck out a pair in the ninth for his sixth save.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 4 p.m. on ACCNX.
