Wake Forest freshman Sophie Faircloth scored her first collegiate goal on a corner kick.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Preseason ACC favorite North Carolina defeated Wake Forest in the 2020 ACC-opener, 4-1, at Dorrance Field on Thursday night.
On a rainy night thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Sally, Sophie Faircloth scored the lone goal of the game for the Demon Deacons (0-2, 0-1 ACC), bending in a corner kick in the 35th minute for her first collegiate score.
"It was a tough challenge for our kids tonight with the last minute time change and bad weather, but we improved collectively despite the result," head coach Tony da Luz said. "Our young players continue to impress. We need to build on this in order to beat Duke on Sunday, and we're grateful to be competing."
The Tar Heels (1-0, 1-0 ACC) netted the first two goals of the game less than 90 seconds apart. Brianna Pinto scored at the 21:42 mark, followed by a Rachel Jones goal 23:05 into the game.
Faircloth's goal cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into halftime, but North Carolina scored twice more in the second half.
Jones notched her second goal in the 58th minute on a penalty, while Hallie Klanke finished off the scoring in the 69th minute.
Madison Howard made four saves in goal in the first half and Mia Raben made three stops in the second half. Each keeper conceded a pair of goals.
UNC had a 20-4 advantage in shots and 11-3 margin in shots on goal.
