WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest field hockey dropped a tightly contested battle 3-1 against reigning national champion North Carolina to open the 2020 season.
"What an inspiration," head coach Jen Averill said. "We have the ability to really strike and we need to polish up on our finishing third, but I'm super proud of us for creating those opportunities. We had some great all-around play from a number of individuals."
Sophomore Nat Friedman put the first goal of the season in the net for the Deacons, the fourth goal of her career. Junior Eleanor Winants found Friedman from the right side, setting up a missile straight down the middle past UNC keeper Amanda Hendry.
"We were really working as a unit today, Friedman said. "I was able to score that goal because we really worked together and finished. Those newcomers are all so eager to learn. They really tried to apply what they have learned from the upperclassmen to the game and that really showed today."
Wake Forest (0-1) was able to contain a tough North Carolina press, not allowing a goal in the first quarter. The Tar Heels (1-0) put their first point on the board in the 23rd minute off a penalty corner from Cassie Sumfest. Wake answered back, tying the game with Friedman's goal, but North Carolina took a 2-1 lead into halftime scoring off another penalty corner with just second remaining before the break.
The second half featured a defensive battle, but North Carolina added to its lead slipping a shot past freshman keeper Ally Butler in the 37th minute. Wake rallied in the fourth quarter with a game-high three shots but couldn't get past Hendry as the Tar Heels sealed the 3-1 victory.
The Deacons split the minutes in the net as freshman Tori Glaister made her collegiate debut in the first half. Butler entered the game in the second half allowing just one goal. Both goalies tallied one save during their debuts.
Senior Elisha Evans and Friedman led the offense for Wake Forest each taking two shots. Tar Heel junior Erin Matson took eight shots for UNC, but the Deacon defense only allowed one goal on the day for the reigning player of the year.
Wake Forest will return to action next weekend as it travels to Charlottesville for a two-game series with the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday and Sunday. Both games are set for noon. Sunday's match will be Wake's ACC opener and will air on ACCN.
