Tiernan Takes Second as Wake Forest Opens Cross Country Season
9/25/2020 6:34:00 PM | Cross Country
Wake Forest finished second on the men's side and third on the women's side, competing against Virginia and North Carolina.
EARLYSVILLE, Va. -- Jack Tiernan and Carter Coughlin finished in the top three to lead the Wake Forest cross country programs in the 2020 season-opener against Virginia and North Carolina on Friday evening.
The Demon Deacons finished second on the men's side and third on the women's side.
Tiernan finished second in the 8k in 24:11.2, followed closely by Coughlin's time of 24:13.5. Luke Tewalt also added a top-10 finish in his collegiate debut, finishing ninth in 24:33.7.
"It was a solid first meet of the season. As is often the case in September, we had some good and some not so good," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country John Hayes said. "The team has definitely been putting in the work so I'm not terribly concerned about our fitness. We still need to close the gap after our third man, and we have multiple guys capable of doing that. There is no way we can be truly satisfied when we don't win, so we will go back and continue to train hard. We've got three weeks until we go again."
On the women's side, six Deacs finished between 11th and 20th place, led by Madeline Rehm's career-best time of 17:36.0 to finish 11th in the 5k.
"First off, it was great to be back racing and we are grateful to everyone who helped make that possible," women's coach Ashley Bastron said. "We gained a lot of experience today and learned where our growth opportunities lie. We are a young team and will continue to get better as the women step into their new roles. We had some strong individual performances we wil build off of."
North Carolina won the women's race, while Virginia claimed the victory in the men's race.
Wake Forest will be in action again Oct. 16, taking on North Carolina and NC State in Kernersville.
