The Cavaliers scored in the 56th minute to break the scoreless tie
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Defenses were on display throughout the entire game, but Virginia found the back of the net in the 56th minute to break a scoreless tie and take a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon in Wake's ACC opener.
"It was not a very pretty game today," head coach Jen Averill said. "But I am incredibly proud of the fight and resiliency. We will learn how to manage moments of the game better and take advantage of missed opportunities."
Wake Forest (1-2, 0-1 ACC) had a few last second corner opportunities to even the game and a chance to force overtime, but the penalty corners were just off the mark. The Deacons took 10 shots on the day, led by Anne van Hoof and Grace Delmotte each with two. Freshmen Delmotte, Hannah Maxwell and Lilly Lancaster all placed a shot on goal, but Virginia keeper Taylor Henriksen made the stops to keep the Demon Deacons off the board.
Laura Jannsen scored the game-winner for the Cavaliers (1-1, 1-0 ACC) assisted by Adele Iacobucci with just three minutes to play in regulation.
In the cage for the Deacons, Tori Glaister played all 60 minutes, the first game this season that she has handled solo goalkeeping duties. Glaister made three saves on the day including a sliding stop against Virginia's first aggressive attempt.
Wake Forest will get a bye weekend and will return to Kentner Stadium for a two-game series with Louisville on Oct. 10 and 11. Both games are set for noon.
