Wake Forest had a number of standout performances in its season-opening meet this weekend at Virginia Tech University.
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Wake Forest concluded its season-opening weekend with multiple personal bests, including Saturday's performance in the high jump from junior Tony Jones who placed first and recorded a personal best leap of 2.14 meters. The Demon Deacons had eight student-athletes compete across six events on the final day of the Hokie Invitational.
"Tony Jones had a great day on Saturday," Director of Track & Field John Hayes said. "His work ethic has greatly improved after an outstanding offseason of training. Tony truly seems to have a different maturity and desire to be successful. Overall, this is what I would call a typical weekend. We have to improve, but I am not displeased as we shoot some rust off, being that it is our first competition since the ACC Indoor Championships last year. I look forward to us competing again in two weeks and being better."
Wake Forest's three other men's competitors on Saturday were in the shot put where sophomore Connor Mathis threw a personal record 15.97m. Additionally in the event, freshmen Mason Ellis and Thomas Kitchell made their collegiate debut and threw 15.57m and 15.51m, respectively. On the women's side in the shot put, redshirt junior Janese Lynch finished third with a mark of 14.58m and junior Chanel Dawson notched a mark of 13.20m.
After competing in the 60m hurdles on Friday, rookie Addison Berry rounded out her collegiate debut on Saturday in the 200m run (25.97 seconds) and the high jump (1.60m). The Demon Deacons lone other competitor in the track events on the final day of the Hokie Invitational was senior Cydney Delley, who crossed the finish line in 57.43 seconds in the 400m run.
