Wake Forest Set for Home ACC Matchup with No. 5 Virginia Tech

The Demon Deacons will look to score a massive ACC victory during Saturday's Genna Wiley Memorial Match.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest men's soccer will return to Atlantic Coast Conference action on Saturday night, hosting No. 5 Virginia Tech at Spry Stadium for the team's annual Genna Wiley Memorial Match and Alumni Night. 

Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will air live on ACC Network Extra. 

Prior to the start of the match from 6-6:30 p.m., Wake Forest Sports Hall of Famer and 2018 MLS Cup Champion Michael Parkhurst will sign autographs on the Spry Stadium practice field. 

Fan Information

A number of new fan experience enhancements are planned for the 2021 season. This includes expanded food and beverage options, including availability on Walt Chyzowych Alumni Hill, an enhanced in-game experience, featuring an expanded video board production with additional cameras, replay, and fan-engaging elements, as well as new immersive experiences to promote the unique culture that is known around professional and collegiate soccer.

Ticket Information

The best way to enjoy Demon Deacon soccer throughout the 2021 season is through the purchase of Season Tickets. Packages start at only $45 for adults or $25 for youth and seniors. 

For those wishing to purchase single-game admission for Spry Stadium, advance purchases are highly encouraged. Single game chairback seats are available for only $25, while bleacher admission is $15.

Health & Safety Protocols

Wake Forest Athletics works closely with Wake Forest University, Forsyth County and state officials to follow COVID-related guidelines for the safety of fans in attendance at Truist Field and all venues. While proof of vaccination is not currently required for spectators, we encourage vaccinations for all. We are proud that nearly 100% of Wake Forest Athletics student-athletes, staff and coaches are vaccinated, as required under University and Athletics policy. Currently, all academic buildings are closed to visitors, and masks are required in all indoor spaces. For additional information regarding steps the University is taking to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission on campus, we strongly encourage you to review the University's COVID-19 Notice.

Wake Forest has several gameday guidelines and strategies. First and foremost is required face coverings for all unvaccinated fans in attendance. Additionally, all fans must wear a mask indoors at all times, regardless of vaccination status. Wake Forest Athletics also requires all non-team personnel to be masked at all times inside the field enclosure. 

The Matchup 

  • Wake Forest and Virginia Tech will meet for the 27th time on Saturday night when the Demon Deacons host their annual Genna Wiley Memorial Match. 

  • Wake Forest holds a 21-3-2 record over Virginia Tech and is 4-0-1 against the Hokies under current head coach Bobby Muuss

  • The Demon Deacons are 12-1-0 at home against the Hokies as well, with the only loss taking place during the 1982 season when the Hokies were ranked No. 20. 

  • The Demon Deacons enter the match with a 7-4-1 record following three straight wins over William & Mary, North Carolina and George Washington. 

  • The Hokies hold an 8-1-3 record. Their most recent result was a 4-0 win over Davidson on Tuesday night.  

  • Wake Forest is 2-2-1 in ACC play while Virginia Tech is 3-1-1. The Hokies only loss came to then-No. 19 Duke. 

  • The last time these teams squared off was in the 2019 ACC Tournament. The match had to be decided in penalty kicks with the Deacs coming out on top. 

Last Time Out

  • Wake Forest secured its seventh win overall on the season and a third-straight victory on Tuesday night, defeating George Washington 3-0 at Spry Stadium.  

  • Just nine minutes into the match sophomore Hosei Kijima netted his first goal of the campaign. 

  • With ten minutes remaining in the second half, Wake Forest doubled its lead courtesy of a George Washignton own goal. 

  • Freshman Roald Mitchell latched onto a cross from fellow freshman Tareq Shihab in the 84th minute. The goal was Mitchell's second this season.

  • Redshirt sophomore Cole McNally started in goal for the Deacs and earned his second-straight shutout. 

Quick Hits

  • The Demon Deacons' attack this season has been led by senior Kyle Holcomb. Holcomb has totaled five goals and provided four assists. His 14 points are also a team-high. 

  • Five different Demon Deacons have logged at least two assists on the season, led by Holcomb and sophomore Chase Oliver with four set ups apiece.

  • Sophomore Garrison Tubbs has played 995 minutes for the Demon Deacons, most on the team so far. 

  • Wake Forest has 13 players that have tallied at least one goal contribution, seven of them are sophomores or freshmen. 

Scouting The Hokies

  • Virginia Tech ended the 2020-21 season with a 7-6-4 record and a 5-5-2 record in ACC action. 

  • The Hokies hold a 8-1-3 record for this campaign so far. Their season began with a win against then-No. 1 Marshall. 

  • Virginia Tech has recorded a 2-1-1 record against ranked teams. 

  • Virginia Tech returns one player that earned 2020 All-ACC honors in Jacob Labovitz. Labovitz is currently the leading goalscorer for the Hokies with seven goals. 

Looking Ahead

  • Wake Forest hosts Loyola (Md.) at Spry Stadium for the last of a three-match homestand. 

  • Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the contest will air on ACC Network Extra.
