No. 15 Demon Deacons Fall on Road at No. 7 Syracuse

10/8/2021 8:31:00 PM | Field Hockey

Hannah Maxwell netted her fourth goal of her sophomore campaign on Friday night.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -  The No. 15 Wake Forest field hockey team fell 2-1 against No. 7 Syracuse on Friday night at J.S. Coyne Field.

The Deacs (5-6, 1-3 ACC) fought their way back from a first-period deficit following a score from the Orange (9-2, 2-1 ACC) as Hannah Maxwell tied the match at one after making a diving effort, flipping the ball into the back of the net with a little over two minutes left in the third.

Following strong and aggressive defensive effort from the Deacs over the next 15 minutes of game action, Syracuse ultimately took hold of a 2-1 lead after a penalty stroke with two minutes and 47 seconds left in regulation.

Maxwell's score marked the fourth goal of her sophomore season, moving her into third on the Deacs with 10 points (four goals and two assists) in 2021.

Tori Glaister notched a season-high tying four saves for the third time this year while facing 13 shots in her 16th-straight start at goalie.

How It Happened

  • After four minutes of game action. Wake Forest threatened first as Nat Friedman attacked the circle and fired a shot wide.

  • Tori Glaister made her first two saves of the games at the eight-minute mark to keep the Orange off the scoreboard early.

    • Following a big stop in the front of the net, Glaister made another save on Syracuse's second corner opportunity. Wake Forest's defense blocked a shot following the Orange's first corner before Glaister's pair of stops.

  • Syracuse took hold of a 1-0 lead with 4 minutes and 55 seconds left in the first period.

  • Wake Forest received their first penalty corner of the match following an obstruction. Laia Vancells' shot was saved by Syracuse.

  • Wake Forest's defense carried their aggressiveness into the second period, tallying a pair of stops with the Orange deep in attack.

  • Syracuse fired three shots in the second period, the only shots of the final 15 minutes of the first half.

  • The Deacs opened the second half as the aggressor as Wake Forest took their second and third penalty corners of the match. Following the first opportunity, Grace Delmotte fired her first shot of the match, but the junior couldn't tie the game as Syracuse's goalie made a stop.

  • The teams went back-and-forth over the next nine minutes before either team was able to attempt a shot.

  • Hannah Maxwell drove the ball into the circle and flipped the ball over Syracuse's goalkeeper to tie the match at one with 2:08 left in the third period.

    • The Demon Deacon defense came up big again before Maxwell's score, stopping a pair of Syracuse corners just moments before the match-tying play.

  • The Deacs notched two-consecutive stops with six-minutes in the game, highlighted by Glaister's fourth save of the night.

    • Following the denial on the corner, Syracuse fired a shot wide off their seventh penalty corner opportunity.

  • Following a video referral, Syracuse capitalized on a penalty stroke to regain the lead (2-1) with two minutes and 47 minutes left.

  • Just moments later, the game went into a break due to a technical issue at J.S. Coyne Field.

  • When play resumed, Wake Forest was unable to break through with the equalizer as the Orange earned a 2-1 victory.
