Demon Deacons Take Down Hokies in Four Set Match

11/4/2021 9:27:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest volleyball team defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies, 3-1, Thursday evening in Varsity Arena for their second consecutive conference win.

The Deacs were led by Kamryn Malloy's match-high 16 kills and .310 hitting percentage. Kalani Whillock recorded a team-high 17 digs to lead the Deacs defensively. Peyton Suess added 12 digs of her own along with 12 kills. Olivia Franke chipped in six kills for a match-high hitting percentage of .429. Andrea Fuentes tallied a match-high 33 assists to lead the Wake Forest offense. Delaney McSweeney registered a match-high four blocks to lead the Deacs on the net.

How It Happened
In the first set, the Deacs and Hokies traded points until the 9-10 mark. A three-point run by the Deacons led by two straight Kamryn Malloy aces gave the Deacs a 13-9 lead. A quick 8-2 run by the Hokies put them up 17-15 and the Deacs could never quite get back on top. Wake Forest battled to tie the set at 22-22, 23-23, and 24-24 before ultimately dropping the first set 24-26.

After dropping set one, Wake Forest jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks in part to two Delaney McSweeney kills and one block. A three-point run by the Hokies put them within reach of the Deacs but to no avail. After Virginia Tech collected their sixth point to make the score 6-7, Wake Forest didn't let them get any closer. Led by Kamryn Malloy, who recorded two kills, the Deacons went on an 8-3 run to distance themselves for good. Wake Forest closed out Virginia Tech in set two by out-scoring them 18-9 to win the set, 25-15.

Much like the second set, Wake Forest jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set due to two Kamryn Malloy kills and an Andrea Fuentes ace. After trading points for a few rallies, the Deacs once again went on a run to distance themselves early in the set. Andrea Fuentes, Kamryn Malloy, Peyton Suess, and Olivia Franke all recorded at least one kill during the Deacs 11-4 run to put Wake Forest up 20-8. Kills by Peyton Suess, Delaney McSweeney and Ashley Slater sealed the set win, 25-10.

In the final set, the Hokies jumped out to a one point lead and held onto it until a five-point Wake Forest run that forced Virginia Tech to take a timeout. After the timeout, Wake Forest closed the set by out-scoring the Hokies 10-6 down the stretch for the 25-15 set win and the 3-1 match win.

Coach's Comments
"We settled down after the first set. We started to play our match and began executing where we wanted to. We served better, we played better offensively, it was great to see the team take ownership. We took care of the ball, executed well, and we cleaned up our side of the net. A conference win is hard to get, and we are happy to come out of this game with a win." - head coach Randi Smart

Up Next
The Demon Deacons have a quick turnaround as they travel to Durham for a Friday night matchup against the Duke Blue Devils. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the match will stream live on ACC Network Extra.
