11/5/2021 9:25:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

DURHAM, N.C. – The Wake Forest volleyball team dropped a three set match to the Duke Blue Devils in Durham on Friday Night.

The Deacs were led by Kamryn Malloy's team-high 12 kills and six digs. Kalani Whillock recorded a match-high 17 digs to lead the Deacs defensively. Ashley Slater chipped in seven kills, while  Delaney McSweeney and Olivia Franke each recorded five of their own. McSweeney also defended the net well, she recorded three block assists on the night.

How It Happened

In the first set, the Deacs and Blue Devils traded points until the 2-2 mark. Duke then went on a 5-0 run before a Kamryn Malloy kill made the score 7-3. Duke once again went on a run, this time it was a 7-3 run that put the Blue Devils up 14-6 before a Peyton Suess kill ended it. The Deacons and Blue Devils went back and forth the rest of the way, with the Blue Devils ultimately winning the set 25-15.

The second set began with ties at the 2-2, 3-3 and 5-5 mark. A kill by Olivia Franke put the Deacs within one (8-7) but Wake Forest couldn't quite catch up. Duke went on a 4-2 run to make it 12-9 before a McSweeney kill stopped the Blue Devil momentum. The teams went back and forth until an Ashley Slater kill made it 15-14. Following Slater's kill, Duke went on a 4-0 run that separated themselves once and for all in the second set. The Blue Devils won the second set 25-21.

Momentum continued to work in Duke's favor in the third set. The Deacs fought but found themselves in an early 7-2 hole but they continued to battle. A kill by Kamryn Malloy shortened Duke's lead to one mid-way through the third set (16-15) but the Deacs couldn't quite tie it up. Wake Forest and Duke alternated points the rest of the way, Duke won the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
