Demon Deacons Topple Syracuse in Dominant Win

3/19/2021 7:26:00 PM | Women's Tennis

The junior duo of Carolyn Campana and Anna Brylin extend their winning streaks en route to the Deacs' victory over the Orange.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 29 Wake Forest women's tennis team picked up a home conference win over Syracuse Friday afternoon at Wake Forest Tennis Center.

The Demon Deacons (8-6, 4-3 ACC) started off the day securing the doubles point with wins from Carolyn Campana and Eliza Omirou as well as Anna Campana and Peyton Pesavento. The third match featuring Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth went unfinished.

Moving into singles play, Wake Forest continued to play well and moved up 2-0 on the Orange (4-7, 3-5 ACC) with a straight-set win from Anna Brylin. Soon after Brylin's victory, Casie Wooten secured another point for the Old Gold and Black, giving the Deacs a 3-0 lead with four matches to go.

After taking the 3-0 lead, the Demon Deacons did not slow down. Anna Campana picked up a quick win in the No. 2 match, clinching the win for Wake Forest.

Subsequently, Wake Forest kept the dominant play going and moved the lead to 5-0 with a three-set victory from No. 98 Eliza Omirou (6-1, 4-6, 6-1). Syracuse eventually picked up a point to get on the board, but the Demon Deacons secured the final point of the match to complete the 6-1 match win.

Quotable

"It was a strong win for us today. We had a slow start in doubles and fell behind at all three spots, including 3-5 in two matches. From that moment on though, we played well the rest of the day.

Anya, Casie, and Anna did a great job from beginning to end to get us the clinch, and we pulled through on some close matches after that. We finally got ourselves above .500 in the conference after a tough early ACC schedule, and we have a big opportunity to push that further on Sunday," - Coach Wyshner
