Wake Forest Ends ACC Run in Match Play

4/17/2021 5:02:00 PM | Women's Golf

Greensboro, N.C. - The No. 2 seeded, and No. 2 nationally ranked Wake Forest women's golf team fell to the No. 3 seeded and No. 3 nationally ranked Florida State in the semifinals of match play at the ACC Championships Saturday afternoon at Sedgefield Country Club

Sophomore Lauren Walsh was the only Demon Deacon to win her match. She was at least two up all day and was one up entering the 18th hole. Walsh won the match two up on the 18th green after senior Siyun Liu and freshman Mimi Rhodes dropped their matches.

Florida State held the 2-1 advantage with two matches still in play. The rest of the day was a marathon for the Deacs. Senior Emilia Migliaccio entered the 16th hole down two. Clinching the par three 16th, she stayed alive. Sophomore Rachel Kuehn won three holes in a row, 10, 11 and 12, to go into 13 one up. She dropped 13th and entered the 14th all square. Kuehn would remain all square in her match to the 18th green.

Wake Forest was down 2-1, with Kuehn's match on the 18th green all square and Migliaccio down one in her match on the 18th tee box. Kuehn remained all square to go into extra holes with Florida State still having the 2-1 advantage. Migliaccio dropped her match on the 18th green and Florida State took the match over the Deacs with three wins.

Kuehn's match remained all square through five extra holes. Although Florida State had already won, the match continued into extra holes due to postseason rankings and awards. A winner needed to be determined. Kuehn dropped her 24-hole match on the par-4 sixth, as she recorded par while her Florida State opponent carded a birdie.

Coach's Comments
"We got down early and that was tough, but I'm so proud of this group for being as resilient as they are. Florida State is a good golf team and our girls never gave up. They fought back and made it a match. Two went to 18 and one went to six extra holes. They showed some toughness that will help us tremendously through Regionals and Nationals." - head coach Kim Lewellen
