Demon Deacons Fall Short in Series Finale Against Cavaliers

5/16/2021 4:23:00 PM | Baseball

Brock Wilken is now tied for the second-most HRs by a Wake Forest freshman in program history with 15.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -  The Demon Deacons fell just short in a Sunday series finale against Virginia, losing their final Atlantic Coast Conference road contest by a tally of 5-4 at Disharoon Park in Charlottesville, Va.

Wake Forest (17-26, 7-22 ACC) fought back from a 3-0 deficit to take a 4-3 advantage midway through the eighth inning, scoring a run in four different frames.

Three-consecutive singles from Shane Muntz, Brendan Tinsman, and Michael Ludowig opened the scoring for Wake Forest in the fourth, while Brock Wilken drove in the next two scores with a solo home run and a RBI-groundout. A sacrifice fly from Adam Cecere plated Chris Lanzilli, who opened the eighth with a leadoff double, to give Wake Forest their first lead of the game heading into the home half of the inning.

The Cavaliers (25-21, 16-17 ACC) responded after five-straight scoreless innings, plating a run in both the eighth and ninth innings, highlighted by a walk-off double, to claim game three.

William Fleming started on the mound for Wake Forest and tossed 6.1 innings, striking out a trio of batters and walking no one while allowing just three earned runs. The Asheville, N.C. native didn't allow a run in his final four frames of action.

Teddy McGraw and Eric Adler were called upon in relief for the final five outs of the contest.

Ludowig and Shane Muntz joined Wilken with two hits during the series finale to lead Wake
Forest at the plate. Additionally, four Deacs tallied one walk a piece.

How It Happened
  • Wake Forest loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the first after a leadoff double from Brock Wilken and a pair of walks to Bobby Seymour and Chris Lanzilli. A ground out ended the scoring opportunity as the series finale remained scoreless.
  • William Fleming tossed a three up, three down first frame, including a pair of strikeouts.
  • Pierce Bennett got on base with two outs in the second after laying down a bunt. A fielder's choice to the next batter ended the half inning.
  • Virginia plated a trio of runs in the second inning behind four hits, including a ground-rule double.
    • Fleming induced a fly out and ground out to end the inning. .
  • After Turconi reached on a throwing error to leadoff the third, the Cavaliers tallied a double play and a strikeout to maintain their 3-0 lead.
  • Fleming responded with a scoreless frame of his own, forcing a pair of groundouts to back-to-back Cavaliers for the opening two outs. After allowing a double, the right hander induced a fly out to Lucas Costello to end the third.
  • The Deacs got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth after three consecutive singles from Shane Muntz, Brendan Tinsman and Michael Ludowig, who drove in Muntz from third to make it a 3-1 contest.
  • Behind his third strikeout of his start, Fleming tossed his second-straight scoreless frame in the home half of the fourth.
  • Brock Wilken launched a solo shot, his 15th home run of the season, to cut Wake Forest's deficit (3-2) in half midway through the fifth.
  • Fleming continued to find his groove, notching his third-straight scoreless inning to keep it a one-run ballgame.
    • After retiring the first two Cavaliers, Fleming hit a batter. He responded by inducing a fly out to Seymour at first base for the third and final out.
  • Ludowig knocked in a two-out single up the middle for his second hit of the game, but a fly out ended the opening half of the sixth.
  • The Cavaliers placed a runner in scoring position with two outs following a single and a ground out. Fleming forced a fly out to Ludowig in left field to get out of the inning.
  • Wake Forest tied the game at three as Costello (leadoff walk) crossed home on a RBI-groundout by Wilken.
    • Costello moved all the way from first to third thanks to a SAC bunt by Turconi and a wild pitch.
  • Fleming tallied the first out in the bottom of the seventh with a fly out. After allowing a single, Teddy McGraw replaced him. The Deacs ended the frame by picking off the Virginia baserunner and forcing a fly out.
  • Wake Forest took their first lead (4-3) of the game in the top of the eighth after a sac fly from Adam Cecere plated Chris Lanzilli, who led-off with a double.
    • Shane Muntz singled up the middle to move Lanzilli to third.
  • Virginia answered with a run of their own to tie the game at four in the home half of the inning. Eric Adler replaced McGraw on the mound with two outs and two on. After the tying run was plated, Adler punched out a Cavalier to conclude the eighth.
  • The Deacs were unable to break the tie as the game moved to the top of the ninth.
    • Turconi and Wilken walked with one out, but a fly out and line out ended the scoring threat.
  • The Cavaliers scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with a RBI-double to right center, scoring the leadoff batter who was walked and clinching the series finale by a score of 5-4.
In the Spotlight
With his solo home run in the fifth inning, Brock Wilken is now tied for the second-most home runs by a true freshman in Wake Forest history with 15.

With four games remaining, the Valrico, Fla. native needs two more long-flies to tie the program record held by Jamie D'Antona (17).

Additionally, his 15 home runs are the most by a true freshman in the nation.

Words From Walter
"Another game where we certainly had opportunities to win. We've got to put more pressure on them. We've got to take a lead going into the ninth. When you're the home team and come into the ninth inning tied, you're on a free roll. It's hard to win these games on the road, so we had to either keep them from scoring in the eighth or cash-in on some opportunities to get a lead heading into the ninth. We have four games left and we'll try to win all four."

On Deck
The Deacs will now travel for their final road and midweek game of the 2021 regular season, squaring off with Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, May 18 in Conway, S.C.

Wake Forest will wrap up the regular season with their final series of 2021 at David F. Couch Ballpark against Pitt on May 20-22, highlighted by Senior Day on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
