Facioni Garners Silver Medal to Close Out Championships
5/16/2021 12:22:00 AM | Track and Field
RALEIGH - The Wake Forest track & field team finalized the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships action on Saturday. Zach Facioni capped off the weekend with a silver medal in the 5000-meter run, posting a personal best which was already the top mark in school history.
In the team standings, the Demon Deacons men finished in 12th place with 22 points while the Wake Forest women finished in 13th with 15 points.
DISTANCE
Junior Facioni posted a second-place performance in the men's 5000m, clocking a 13:30.84. His time was a PR and rewrote his own school record. Aaron Las Heras battled from behind and made his way all the way into 5th place, earning a personal best.
On the women's side, Hana Catsimanes brought home her second personal best of the weekend with a 16:38.72 for a 23rd place finish.
FIELD EVENTS
In the women's high jump, Cassie Martin led the way with a 1.70m leap that placed her 7th while Meghan O'Malley collected a personal best jump with 1.65m.
The men's discus recorded two top-10 finishes with Andrew White (54.02m) and Thomas Kitchell (53.71m). On the women's side, Janese Lynch recorded a season best with a toss of 43.58m.
Junior Tony Jones posted a solid 2.05m high jump that placed him tied for ninth.
Quote -- Director of Track & Field, John Hayes
"We left way too many points out there to hit our goals. We lost a lot in execution but not in desire or effort. It was good to finish on a high note with the men's 5,000m."
"Zach Facioni once again showed what a fierce competitor he is by lowering his school record and just missed the win. Aaron Las Heras had a tremendous double to finish fifth in a personal best just over two hours after placing in the 1500m. We have a large and strong contingent going to the NCAA East Region in two weeks. That should be exciting!"
