2021 Virtual Black & Golden Globes

Over the course of the coming week (June 14-18) on social media and GoDeacs.com, the 2021 Virtual Black & Golden Globes will celebrate the accomplishments of Demon Deacon student-athletes from the 2020-21 sport seasons.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—Wake Forest Athletics has once again moved its annual spring awards show for its student-athletes, the Black & Golden Globes, online to social media and GoDeacs.com. 

Over the course of five days (June 14-18), the 2021 Virtual Black & Golden Globes will celebrate the accomplishments of Demon Deacon student-athletes, coaches and teams during the 2020-21 sports seasons. The virtual event will spotlight the individual and team achievements across all 18 programs.

From academics, to on-field performances and standout coaching efforts, the Black & Golden Globes has it all covered, which will have Deacon Nation feeling pride, excitement and happiness during this uncertain and unprecedented time.

Monday, June 14: 12-3 p.m. 
Female Rookie of the Year

  • Sophie Faircloth - Women's Soccer

    • Earned a spot on the All-ACC Freshman team as she led the team in goals (4), points (10), shot percentage (.364), minutes played (1,321), games started (14) and assists (2).

  • Jewel Spear - Women's Basketball

    • Earned a spot on the All-ACC Freshman team and the All-ACC Academic Team, finishing the season with 10.9 points per game which ranked third on the team. 

  • Ashley Slater - Volleyball

    • Was an ACC All-Freshman Team selection as she finished second on the team in points (177), kills (156) and service aces (7) while her 27 kills in a match against Boston College were the most by a Demon Deacon since 2014.

  • Hannah Maxwell -  Field Hockey

    • Twice earned ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors in the spring while finishing her debut season with four goals. 

Male Rookie of the Year 

  • Nick Andersen - Football 

    • Highlighted by a three-interception performance in a ranked victory over Virginia Tech, the walk-on finished the season with 63 tackles while being named an All-ACC Academic Team selection. 

  • Garrison Tubbs - Men's Soccer 

    • Was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team and TopDrawerSoccer's Best XI Freshman Team, as he helped the Demon Deacons once again rank amongst the best teams nationally while holding opponents to less than one goal per match. 

  • Brock Wilken - Baseball

    • Named An All-ACC Freshman Team selection and was a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American, he finished first in the country in home runs by a freshman (17) in the regular season while starting at third base in all 47 games for the Deacs. 

  • Carter Whitt - Men's Basketball

    • Enrolled at Wake Forest for the spring 2021 semester and earned a spot in the starting lineup for 10 of 19 games while finishing as the team's leader in assists per game. 

  • Michael Brennan - Men's Golf 

    • Became the first known Deac to win back-to-back events as a true freshman as he shot a team-low tournament score of 16-under 200 at the Kiawah Invitational. 

ACC Postgraduate Scholarship Recipients 

  • Hannah Betfort | Senior | Health and Exercise Science

    • A two-time team captain, Betfort will receive her degree in Health and Exercise Science in May. The Charleston, S.C. native was a third-team All-ACC selection in the fall of 2020. As a junior in 2019, she was named to the ACC All-Academic Team. Betfort was most recently selected with the No. 37 pick by Portland Thorns FC in the 2021 National Women's Soccer League Draft. With her selection, Betfort became the sixth Demon Deacon to be selected in the NWSL Draft and the first since Bayley Feist in the second round in 2019.

  • Zach Tom | Redshirt Junior | Business Enterprise Management

    • A native of Prairieville, Louisiana, Tom will receive his degree in Business Enterprise Management. He started all nine games during the 2020 season at left tackle for the Demon Deacons and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the second year in a row. Prior to the 2020 season, Tom was the only returning Power-5 center to not commit a penalty in 500+ snaps and had not allowed a sack in his career.

  • Emilia Migliaccio | Senior | Communications

    • The senior from Cary, North Carolina, is a three-time All-American, three-time All-ACC Academic team member and reigning ACC Champion. She is tied for third in the record books with five individual titles.

Tuesday, June 15: 12-3 p.m. 
Assistant Coach of the Year
 

  • Erin Dickerson - Women's Basketball 

    • In her first season at Wake Forest, the Demon Deacons secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 31 years, earning a No. 9 seed in the tournament.

  • Jackie Briggs - Field Hockey 

    • Helped lead Wake Forest to the ACC's Automatic Qualifier match for the NCAA Tournament while being immensely involved in leading the team to a spot in the top-10 of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll.

  • Warren Ruggiero - Football

    • With the help of two 50-plus point games against Campbell and North Carolina, Wake Forest set a new program record, scoring 36.0 points per game. The previous record was held by the 2017 Dave Clawson-led squad that averaged 35.3 points per game.

  • Chris Eaton - Men's Tennis

    • In his first three years on staff, Eaton has helped guide the Deacs to the top of the college tennis world, as the Demon Deacons won the National Championship in the 2017-18 season. 

  • Gray Horn - Track & Field

    • Helped guide Anna Bush to an ACC title and Second Team All-American honors in the heptathlon. Wake Forest also had two student-athletes earn individual titles at the ACC Indoor Championships for the first time since 2007.

Male Athlete of the Year (Arnold Palmer Award Recipient)

One of Wake Forest University's most distinguished alumni, Arnold Palmer exemplified the pursuit of excellence, serving as an ambassador, role model, benefactor and friend to the Demon Deacons. Named in his honor, the Arnold Palmer Athlete of the Year Award is presented annually to the Wake Forest University male student-athlete whose athletic achievements best represent the standards of excellence of the Wake Forest male athletic programs.

  • Jaquarii Roberson - Football

    • Became the 29th All-American in program history, earning second team status from Pro Football Focus while also collecting All-ACC honors from multiple outlets including All-ACC Second Team honors from the coaches. Owns the school record for yards per game in a single season with 102.9 yards per game and was the only player in the ACC to average better than 100 yards per game this season.

  • Zach Facioni - Cross Country

    • Earned All-America honors with his 27th place finish in a time of 30:30.9 at the NCAA Cross Country Championship while also being named the Southeast Region's Men's Athlete of the Year honor. He also participated in the NCAA Championships in Oregon in the 5000m. . 

  • Tony Jones - Track & Field

    • Became the 14th Deacon to win an ACC title, doing so in the high jump as he also broke a 49-year-old program record with a jump of 2.18 meters. Collected seven first place finishes as well.

  • Nico Benalcazar - Men's Soccer 

    • Earned All-ACC Second Team honors as he started all 18 of Wake Forest's matches during the split season and led the team in minutes. Along with helping lead the team to seven shutouts, he scored the game-winning goal in Wake Forest's 2-0 victory over Clemson on Oct. 30 to be named ACC Defensive Player of the Week. 

  • Calvin Harris - Men's Soccer

    • Earned All-ACC First Team honors, scoring four goals along with two assists in nine starts during the fall portion of the 2020-21 season. In January, he signed a Generation adidas contract before being selected with the No. 2-overall pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft. Was Wake Forest's highest draft selection since Jack Harrison went No. 1 in 2016. 

  • Henri Squire - Men's Tennis

    • Was named an ITA All-American, as he  finished the season ranked No. 19 in the nation with a 17-6 record that included eight victories over ranked opponents.

  • Alex Fitzpatrick - Men's Golf

    • Named a PING All-American, he led the team with a 70.00 stroke average while also picking up his first collegiate title at the Valspar Collegiate, giving him an exemption to the PGA Valspar Championship in 2022. 

  • Ryan Cusick - Baseball

    • Made 12 starts on the mound, tossing 70.0 innings and earning three wins while tallying a career-high 108 K's, the eighth-most strikeouts in a single campaign by a Demon Deacon.

Female Athlete of the Year (Marge Crisp Award Recipient)

Marge Crisp was a true pioneer in women's athletics and her commitment and pursuit of excellence made her one of the most influential people in the history of women's athletics at Wake Forest. The Marge Crisp Athlete of the Year Award is presented annually to the Wake Forest University female athlete whose athletic achievements best represent the standards of excellence of the Wake Forest female athletic programs.

  • Ivana Raca - Women's Basketball

    • Finished her senior season averaging 16.7 points per game and 9.0 rebounds per game including 10 double-double performances as she became the fourth player in Wake Forest program history to earn First Team All-ACC honors, joining Dearica Hamby (2013-14, 2014-15), Tracy Connor (1995-96) and Jen Hoover (Mitchell) (1989-90).

  • Anna Bush - Track & Field 

    • Became the first female Demon Deacon to win a pentathlon championship as she also was named a Second Team All-American while finishing 12th in the NCAA Indoor Championships. 

  • Carolyn Campana - Women's Tennis

    • Was named Wake Forest's first singles ITA All-American since 2002, as she finished the year with18 total victories in her appearances on the court. 

  • Rachel Kuehn - Women's Golf

    • Collecting WGCA All-America Second Team accolades, Kuehn was second on the team with a 71.78 stroke average and was the only Deac to win an individual title, doing so at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in February. She also had five top 25 finishes in six events and earned medalist honors at the ACC Championship in April. 

Morgan Judd Award 

The Morgan Judd award will go to a freshman dancer who possesses some of the countless qualities Morgan displayed: sincerity, kindheartedness, humble leadership, a contagiously positive spirit, a radiating passion for dancing and a love and dedication for the dance team.

Wednesday, June 15: 12-4 p.m. 
Female Team of the Year 

  • Women's Golf

    • The team won two team titles, two individual titles and finished third at ACC Championships. Also earned the top seed in the Stanford Regional. 

  • Women's Basketball 

    • Selected to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 31 years, earning a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Also reached the ACC Tournament quarterfinals for the second consecutive season, marking the first time the Demon Deacons have accomplished this feat in back-to-back seasons since 2012 and 2013. 

  • Women's Tennis

    • Captured a pair of top-25 victories against No. 18 UCF, 4-3, during ITA Kickoff Weekend and against No. 13 Georgia Tech, 7-0, while finishing the year 8-3 on home court in Winston-Salem. 

  • Women's Track & Field

    • Captured one ACC title (Anna Bush) and had three All-American performances from Hannah Brookover, Aleeya Hutchins and Buch. Alexandra Roberts also set the school record in the Javelin.  

  • Field Hockey

    • Finished the regular season in the Atlantic Coast Conference Automatic Qualifier for the NCAA Tournament. Featured a trio of ACC Player of the Week honorees in Hannah Maxwell (twice) and Tori Glaister.

Male Team of the Year 

  • Football

    • Is the only program in the nation to achieve a 990 APR, 90 or better GSR and reach five straight bowl games under their current head coach, as the Demon Deacons went undefeated in the month of October including three consecutive conference wins over Virginia, Virginia Tech and Syraucuse.

  • Men's Golf

    • Won two team titles with one tie and three individual titles while earning a No. 1 seed in the Washington Regional. Shot a program record-breaking score of 21 under par in the opening round of the Kiawah Invitational, the lowest 18-hole team score in relation to par in program history.

  • Men's Cross Country

    • Wake Forest's nationally-ranked men's cross country team placed 15th in the NCAA Cross Country Championship. It was the Demon Deacons' best finish as a program since 1996. 

  • Men's Soccer 

    • Spent the entire season ranked in the top-10 of the United Soccer Coaches poll including the first four weeks at No. 1. Advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in six seasons while six student-athletes from the fall turned professional. 

  • Men's Tennis

    • For the past nine seasons the Demon Deacons hold an  impressive 226-66 record, averaging 25 wins a season.Their 27-5 2021 regular season record was the fifth-most wins in program history and it was the sixth-straight season with at least 24 or more wins. 

Coach of the Year

  • Jen Hoover - Women's Basketball 

    • Led the Demon Deacons to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 31 years, earning a No. 9 seed in the tournament. Also recorded six victories over top-50 NET ranked teams while also playing the No. 2 average opponent NET ranking in the nation.

  • Bobby Muuss - Men's Soccer 

    • Reaching 100 victories as head coach of Wake Forest men's soccer in just his 128th game at the helm, Muuss lead Wake Forest to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and a final ranking of No. 6 nationally. 

  • Jerry Haas - Men's Golf

    • Led the Demon Deacons to multiple titles while also earning a No. 1 seed in the Washington Regional. 

  • Tony Bresky -- Men's Tennis

    • Has guided the program to the top of the tennis world over the course of his first nine seasons on campus. The program's rise to being a national power culminated in 2018 when the program captured it's first ever NCAA Championship, defeating Ohio State 4-2.

  • Kim Lewellen -- Women's Golf

    • The reigning WGCA Coach of the Year who was also selected as the head coach of the 2021 US Arnold Palmer Cup Team, Lewellen led the Demon Deacons to the No. 1 seed in the Stanford Regional. 

Highlight of the Year 

  • Nick Andersen earns football scholarship after Virginia Tech win
  • Women's Basketball earns a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1989

Ron & Linda Wellman Life Teammate Award

  • The Life Teammate Award recognizes a male and female student-athlete who best represents the characteristics of being a life teammate. Established in 2019, the award was inspired by the Will to Live Foundation which was founded by John Trautwein, a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played at Northwestern University during Wellman's tenure as head baseball coach of the Wildcats. The "Will to Live Foundation" was founded by Trautwein following the tragic suicide of his teenage son, Will. The foundation is dedicated to preventing teen suicide by improving the lives and the "will to live" of teenagers everywhere through education and mental health education while encouraging them to be good teammates for life.

Thursday, June 17: 12-3 p.m. 

  • FAR Academic Excellence Award / Dean's List Honorees

  • Edward G. Wilson Student-Athlete of the Year Award

  • ACC Top Six For Service 

    • Emilia Migliaccio, senior women's golf student-athlete, was appointed as Wake Forest's Student-Athlete Advisory Council President in May 2020. After being voted by her peers to become S.A.A.C. President in April 2020, Migliaccio has presented a significant commitment to lead, guide and educate Wake Forest's entire student body on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. 

    • Cydney Delley, who's a senior women's track and field student-athlete and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Vice President at Wake Forest and ACC S.A.A.C. member, has helped create a culture of belonging for all through her efforts off the track.

    • Lyndon Wood, who is a sophomore women's soccer student-athlete that just completed her first year on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served as an active Atlantic Coast Conference S.A.A.C. representative. Her eagerness to be involved was felt throughout the student-athlete community as she brought creativity to student-athlete engagement despite the COVID-19 pandemic. 

    • Olivia Summiel and Anaia Hoard are co-award recipients and Demon Deacon women's basketball student-athletes. Summiel and Hoard worked with Wake Forest leadership and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to help promote the importance of Hoard's "Together We Stand" artwork to be displayed for all to see. Summiel led the effort to find a black-owned print shop in Winston-Salem to help support their business and print 200-plus t-shirts. This effort was noticed by all watching Atlantic Coast Conference sports, as Wake Forest's student-athletes and coaches proudly wore a "Together We Stand" t-shirt during pregame prior to each contest during the 2020-21 season.

    • Maggie Dickman, who is a sophomore student-athlete on the Deacons field hockey team and a proud member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, leads Wake Forest Athletics mental health group with Sport Psychologist, Dr. Rachel Conway. The Louisville, Ky. native has assisted with the new "Deacs Do Mental Health" social media page with the goal to destigmatize mental health and promote positive outlets and platforms.

    • Michael DeShields, who was a senior men's soccer student-athlete and earned his degree in December,  was the fifth overall pick in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft by DC United in January. Prior to that, DeShields helped influence his men's soccer teammates and his fellow Wake Forest students through conversations of allyship by participating in peaceful protests. Through this work, the Baltimore, Md. native shared personal experiences with his teammates and coaches to engage at a deeper level. The ethos of the men's soccer team during its fall 2020 season became, "Different but United."
