The Demon Deacons will face a challenging ACC schedule that features the other four conference schools that made the 2020 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest men's soccer on Monday announced the program's 2021 schedule, which will begin with three-straight home matches at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons' conference schedule will also feature the other four Atlantic Coast Conference teams that made the 2020 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship including divisional crossover matches with North Carolina and Pitt, both of whom made the College Cup.
"We are excited to announce our 2021 schedule which features an extremely challenging set of ACC matchups along with several difficult non-conference matchups that will prepare us for the conference slate," said head coach Bobby Muuss. "As we look to fill Spry Stadium -- the best college soccer venue in the country -- once again with our incredible Wake Forest community, The Congregation and the student body, we look forward to hosting 11 home matches in the fall."
Heading into the 2021 season, the Demon Deacons have been ranked in the top-25 of the United Soccer Coaches poll for 86-straight weeks and the top-10 for 66-straight weeks. Both streaks are the longest in the country. Additionally, Wake Forest's 102 victories over the last six seasons are the most in the country during that span and 12 more than any other Division I program.
The Demon Deacons will open the season with three-straight non-conference matches at Spry, starting with a showdown against VCU on Thursday, Aug. 26. It will mark the eighth all-time meeting between the two programs and the first since the 2013 season. The Demon Deacons hold a 5-0-2 advantage in the all-time series.
Wake Forest will remain at home to face Bucknell (Aug. 29) and Cornell (Sept. 4), before the first of eight ACC matchups will take place on Friday, Sept. 10, when Wake Forest travels to Kentucky to face Louisville. The Demon Deacons won both matchups against the Cardinals last season including a 3-1 victory at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium to open the campaign.
Wake Forest's first home ACC match will come against Pitt on Friday, Sept. 17, matching the Demon Deacons' two more recent head coaches in Muuss and Jay Vidovich (1994-2014). During the 2020 season, Vidovich led the Panthers to the program's first College Cup appearance.
Wake Forest's lone road non-conference match will come on Monday, Sept. 20, when the Demon Deacons travel to Fairfax, Va., to face George Mason. It will mark the fourth all-time meeting with the Patriots and the first since the 2003 season.
The Demon Deacons will close out the month of September with a road match against NC State (Sept. 24) before hosting Liberty (Sept. 28).
The month of October will open with a match against Clemson, the defending ACC Champions, on Oct. 1. Wake Forest currently is riding a 10-match unbeaten streak against Clemson at Spry dating back to a 2-0 victory on Oct. 22, 2004.
Wake Forest will also face North Carolina (Oct. 8) and Boston College (Oct. 23) on the road while hosting Virginia Tech (Oct. 16) and Syracuse (Oct. 29) in conference play in October.
William & Mary (Oct. 5), George Washington (Oct. 12) and Loyola (Md.) (Oct. 19) will make appearances at Spry during the final month of the regular season. Wake Forest hosted both William & Mary and Loyola during the 2019 season, while George Washington will be coming to Spry for the first time since the 2016 season.
