
Deacs Dominate in Season Opener

Wilmington, N.C. – The Wake Forest volleyball team swept the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, 3-0, in the first match of the season.
This was the first sweep for Wake Forest since they took down ACC foe Virginia Tech, 3-0, November 24, 2019, in Blacksburg.
The Deacs swiftly took the first set, hitting an impressive .810 with 18 kills to Wilmington's six. Junior Peyton Suess led the Deacs with 13 kills and a .632 hitting percentage on the match. The efficiency carried over to the second and third sets, with the Deacs winning 25-16 and 25-18, recording a .641 kill percentage. Every Deac that recorded a kill hit above .410 for the match.
How It Happened
Wake Forest jumped out to an early 10-6 lead in the first set and carried it all the way to 16-6 with five different Deacs contributing points. Back-to-back scoring plays from graduate transfer Kamryn Malloy and kills from Suess and sophomore Ashley Slater helped seal the set, 25-12.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with the Deacs jumping out to a 15-9 lead with every player on the floor contributing points. Back-to-back service aces from Slater and three kills in a row by Malloy and sophomore Olivia Franke gave the Deacs a 23-13 advantage. Kills from Franke and Slater closed out the set, 25-16.
The third set continued the tale of the tape, with Wake Forest taking an early 9-3 lead. The Seahawks attempted a comeback, closing the gap to 13-11, and kept it close until Suess went for three kills in a row and Malloy chipped in one to take the Deacs up 19-14. Suess and Malloy continued to capitalize on their offensive firepower, as each recorded another kill before the end of the match. Franke added in one more kill to finish the match with a 25-18 third set victory.
Deacs in their Debut
Making her collegiate debut in the libero role, freshman Kalani Whillock led the team with 12 digs.
Transfer Andrea Fuentes orchestrated the offense to the win, with 41 assists. She also tallied four kills on six attempts.
Kamryn Malloy never came off the court for the Deacs, playing all six rotations to record 10 kills, five digs and one service ace.
