Wake Forest Opens Season in Wilmington

8/26/2021 5:31:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team will begin it's 2021 season with a three-game event in Wilmington, North Carolina, hosted by UNC Wilmington.

Coming into the 2021 season, Wake Forest features several key student-athletes that include two of their top kills leaders, Ashley Slater (156) and Peyton Suess (108). Not only was Slater one of three Demon Deacons who collected 100 or more kills, she was the first to be named to the All-ACC Freshman Team since 2016 (Caitlyn Della and Caroline Rassenfoss). On the defensive end, the squad returns block leader Olivia Franke who swatted away 43 attempts last season. As a whole, the Old Gold and Black ranked in the top 10 of the ACC when it came to solo block average (2.05).

Welcome to Wake Forest
This upcoming season, the Demon Deacons will be featuring two highly touted transfer student-athletes, Andrea Fuentes from Missouri, and Kamryn Malloy from Indiana. Fuentes enters her first year with Wake Forest after transferring from Missouri where she earned All-SEC honors in 2019 and 2020. Considered one of the best setters with the Tigers, she tallied 3,088 assists while averaging 10.19 assists per match. Her impressive sets per game average placed her fifth all-time in program history. Fuentes will be looked upon to guide the Wake offense throughout the season while setting her teammates, and the team, up for success.

Malloy joins the Deacons after three years with the Indiana Hoosiers. Malloy did not play in 2020 with Indiana. As a junior at Indiana, Malloy played in 32 matches and led the team in aces with 33, and also contributed 164 kills and 275 digs. As a sophomore, Malloy played in 25 matches and 83 sets. During a match versus Rutgers, she tied an Indiana volleyball record with the second-most aces during a four-set match with six. She is also a two-time Academic All Big-10 honoree.

Returning Talent
Along with two highly touted transfers, the Deacons will bring back two key contributors from last season in junior Peyton Suess, and sophomore Ashley Slater. Seuss, a pin hitter, was one of the more consistent student-athletes for the Deacs last season. In the 16 matches she played, Suess started in 13 of them while appearing in 55 of 59 sets. On the offensive end, she tallied 108 kills which ranked third on the team. Not only did Suess have a strong season on the offensive end, but she also had a strong defensive season as well. In those 16 matches, Suess was tied for fifth on the squad in both blocks (18) and digs (52). Her consistency and guidance will be looked upon by the underclassmen throughout the season.

Slater, also a pin hitter, enters her sophomore year looking to continue the success of her freshman season, in which she was named to the ACC All-Freshman team. Last season, Slater played in all 16 matches while making 11 starts. She tallied a total of 177 points, which was the second most on the team. She was third most on the team in digs (61), and in two separate occasions during the 2020-21 season, Slater totaled 20+ kills in a match.

The Matches
Friday marks the first meeting between UNC Wilmington and Wake Forest since 2012.  In the last matchup (August 31, 2012), the Deacs topped the Seahawks, 3-2, and currently hold a 5-1 series advantage. Currently, Wake Forest is on a five-match win streak that dates to November 5, 1981.

Saturday will be the 11th meeting between Wake Forest and Furman. The Deacons currently carry a 7-3 record all-time against the Paladins. The last two matches have ended in a 3-0 sweep. Wake Forest swept Furman in 2019, and Furman swept Wake Forest the meeting prior to that in 2012.

This weekend's matchup will be the first between the Demon Deacons and the Lions. Last season, North Alabama finished with a 1-13 record with their win coming against Lipscomb by a score of 3-2. Despite their record, North Alabama was one of the stronger defensive teams in the ASUN Conference. They ranked within the top-five in multiple defensive categories including solo block average (2.43) and solo blocks (117), at third and fifth place respectively.
