Demon Deacons Sweep Davidson in Non-Conference Finale

9/17/2021 9:54:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest volleyball team swept the Davidson Wildcats, 3-0, in their non-conference finale Friday night in Reynolds Gym.

The Deacs were led by Kamryn Malloy's and Olivia Franke's 10 and nine kills that were brought together with Andrea Fuentes' 35 assists on the night. Fuentes and Peyton Suess each registered three service aces. Suess and Kalani Whillock led the team with 11 and 13 digs, respectively. Middle blocker Delaney McSweeney led the team on the net with four blocks.

How It Happened
The Deacs started slow in the first set, taking a timeout after going down 8-3. After several score ties all the way up to 20-20 and 21-21, Wake Forest was able to pull away to win the set 25-22. Wake came out ready to play in the second set, taking the first lead at 3-1. With tie scores at three, four, five, eight, nine and 11, set two stayed close until the end. A service ace from Fuentes tied it again at 13 and a fill from Franke tied it at 16. The Deacs took a 19-16 lead with a kill from Kamryn Malloy and never looked back. A kill from McSweeney got them to set point and they were able to capitalize on a Davidson service error to take the set, 25-20.

The third set proved to be a continuation of the competitiveness. The Wildcats took an early 6-3 lead but a service ace and kill from Suess and back-to-back kills from Franke tied the set at nine. Davidson was able to tie up at 11 and 12 but a kill and block from McSweeney gave the Deacs the 15-12 lead and Davidson couldn't catch up. After taking a 21-17 lead off Davidson errors, the Deacs found themselves tied again at 21, 22, 23 and 24. Back-to-back kills from Franke kept Wake Forest alive and back-to-back kills from Suess sealed the set 26-24 for the Deacs' 3-0 win.

Coach's Comments
"We're always happy when we get a win at home. The team executed when they needed to and got some big stops to not drop a set. We have some things to work on before we bring in Georgia Tech next week, but overall, it was a good team effort and that's what we want. If every player on the court is working to earn every point, we will always be competitive." – head coach Randi Smart
