Demon Deacons Set to Take on North Carolina
1/21/2022 3:38:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's basketball team is back home in Winston-Salem for a rivalry matchup with North Carolina on Saturday night inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Demon Deacons (15-4, 5-3) come into Saturday's game fresh off two landmark road wins at Virginia (63-55) and Georgia Tech (80-64), the team's first victories in Charlottesville and Atlanta since 2010 and 2004, respectively.
Redshirt sophomore guard Damari Monsanto notably made his season debut on Wednesday night, as the Florida native grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, poured in two three-pointers, and blocked a pair of shots in Atlanta.
Alondes Williams continued his All-ACC caliber season at Georgia Tech, finishing one assist shy of a double-double with 19 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds to go along with a career-high three blocked shots. The Milwaukee native continues to be the only player in the country averaging at least 20 points (20.3), 5.0 rebounds (6.8), and 5.0 assists (5.2).
As the current ACC leader in both points per game and assists per game, Williams is on track to be the first player in the ACC to lead both categories for a season since they started tracking assists in 1973.
With 13 points and a career-high nine assists against the Yellow Jackets, Jake LaRavia has scored in double-figures in all eight of the Deacs' ACC games this season. LaRavia is currently averaging 15.0 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.0 assists on 55.6 percent shooting in conference play.
The Williams/LaRavia duo is averaging a combined 35.0 points per game this season and is the top scoring tandem in the ACC.
Through eight ACC games, the Demon Deacons have held conference opponents to just 40.5 percent from the floor, the third-best mark in the ACC. Wake Forest has held five of their past seven opponents to sub-40 percent shooting.
The Tar Heels (12-5, 4-2) are coming off an 85-57 loss at the hands of Miami on Tuesday and are led by first-year head coach Hubert Davis.
A win over North Carolina on Saturday would mark the program's first two-game win streak over the Tar Heels in the Joel Coliseum since the Deacs came away with back-to-back home victories in 2002 and 2003. Wake Forest defeated North Carolina 74-57 in the two teams' last matchup in Winston-Salem during the 2019-20 season.
Tipoff inside the Joel is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET and the game will air live on ACC Network.
