
Deacs Fall in Three Frames to Host Miami on Friday Night

Paige Crawford reached her eighth consecutive match of double-digit numbers in kills.
MIAMI, Fla. – Opening the second of an ongoing two-week road tilt, Wake Forest volleyball (12-8, 4-5) faced Miami (12-8, 5-4) on Friday evening (Oct. 21) in another Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) outing and its 20th match of the fall. The host Hurricanes went on to win the night in a 3-0 sweep (18-25, 23-25, 20-25).
Paige Crawford again had her usual dependable hitting on full display, leading the Demon Deacons with 12 kills and going for an eight-straight performance of double-figures in that statistical category. The Wimberley, Texas native also added eight digs.
Rian Baker secured the fourth double-double of her freshman campaign, totaling 15 assists and 14 digs, both of which were team-highs. The setter also collected three service aces.
Ashley Slater and Olivia Franke contributed nine and six kills, respectively.
Emma Farrell chipped in 13 digs and seven assists. Kalani Whillock gathered 11 digs and Emmy Ogogor rounded out the defense with a line of four blocks.
Wake Forest out-dug Miami, 55-52.
How it Happened

Ashley Slater was the first Deac to net a point, doing so on a reaching kill.

Miami tacked on a 5-1 start to open set one, throwing down a few kills along with a service ace.

Slater struck two more, starting a 4-0 push for Wake Forest and cutting the lead to 5-4.

As a response, Miami scored on three of its next four attempts.

Following a challenge from both sides, the Hurricanes led 10-6 in the first set.

Slater continued her offensive attack, with Paige Crawford joining in to put down a pair of kills.

However, Miami stayed in front by the time the first media timeout arrived, 15-9.

The Hurricanes scored twice more coming out of the break.

Crawford put an end to the push with a leap and slam from right outside of the middle.

Miami struggled with errors during its next stretch, as Crawford hammered a couple of balls to help Wake Forest creep into the deficit, 21-14.

Two more kills from the Hurricanes allowed them to reach set point.

Andrea Fuentes broke up the surge with a service ace.

Needing only one more point in the period, Miami completed the deed on a final kill, taking set one in a 25-18 finish.

Crawford went 5-of-11 on attacks in the opening set, suffering only one error.

Miami opened set two in a similar fashion to the first, leading 6-2.

Swings by Franke and Peyton Suess helped keep the Deacs close by.

Using an ace, the Hurricanes upped their advantage to 10-6.

After the host team rang in another point, Wake Forest subsequently called for a timeout.

Slater floated to get a tip kill immediately afterward.

Back-to-back blocks by Miami allowed the team to maintain a four-point lead.

Nevertheless, Crawford and Slater stayed successful in their attacks. Shortly after Kalani Whillock handed over an ace, Wake Forest tied the margin at 14-14 in set two.

Next, Crawford skied high to give her Deacs their first lead of the frame.

Possessions were traded for a bit, and Franke threw in a kill from the right side of the court to keep Wake Forest narrowly in front, 19-17.

Miami soon tied the board up again, 19-19.

Two possessions later, the Hurricanes notched an ace to go ahead, 21-20.

A service error on their next play evened things yet again.

A couple of middle kills and an ace saw Miami reach set point in the second.

Suess provided an answer to give Wake Forest another point, but the host connected on another attack to put an end to set two, 25-23.

Whillock and Emma Farrell each racked up five digs in the period.

Franke punched an attack and Crawford lined up a picture-perfect ace, but Wake Forest stayed behind, 13-5.

The Deacs took a timeout to talk things over.

Franke's defense, Slater's slams, and two aces by Rian Baker all gave the Deacons light, putting in points to trail 14-10.

Four successful plays on five actions bumped the Miami lead to 18-11 in set three.

Powerful spikes by Crawford allowed Wake Forest to trade a slew of possessions with its foe.

Soon down 22-15, Wake Forest ignited a 5-1 boost, headlined by back-to-back solo blocks from Emmy Ogogor.

Miami reached match point on a kill from far out.

The Hurricanes then clinched the match with one more hit, ending set three on a 25-20 decision.
