Fuentes Notches Career Milestone, Deacs Fall to Panthers on Friday in Home Matchup

Andrea Fuentes added another feat to her impressive collegiate resume.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Back at home for the first time in two weeks, Wake Forest volleyball (12-10, 4-7) took on a major test in facing its third ranked opponent of the 2022 fall season: No. 7 Pittsburgh (21-2, 11-0). The Panthers ultimately swept the Demon Deacons in three sets (21-25, 13-25, 19-25) on Friday evening (Oct. 28).

Early in set one, setter Andrea Fuentes reached a significant, personal milestone by collecting the 4,500th assist of her collegiate career. The graduate student is second in total assists (376) on the Deacs' roster this year, recording nine in the Friday match. Fuentes has totaled 1,421 assists in two seasons at Wake Forest.

Olivia Franke led the Deacons in kills for the first time this season, ending with eight. The junior additionally assisted on eight blocks.

Rian Baker played a balanced match to finish with 12 assists, seven digs, and three service aces.

Emma Farrell scattered around the floor to make a handful of plays, tallying a team-high 11 digs along with five assists.

Paige Crawford added seven kills and Ashley Slater had six. Both teams collected 34 total digs.
 

How it Happened

  • Pittsburgh firstly went up 5-1 in the first set.

    • Likewise to her previous match, Emmy Ogogor was the first Wake Forest individual to net a kill.

  • Paige Crawford was next to fly high, followed by an Olivia Franke throw to have the Deacons trailing close by, 7-5.

    • An attacking error by the Panthers on the next possession made it a one-point game.

  • Pittsburgh soon scored three of its next four tries, bumping its lead ahead to 11-8.

  • Nevertheless, Wake Forest had an answer, stringing a 4-0 run and taking a 12-11 advantage after Rian Baker landed a service ace.

  • After a few traded plays, Pittsburgh got hot again, piecing a 10-2 clip to lead by five.

  • The Deacs again jumped on a run, plugging in five unanswered points.

    • Crawford and Ashley Slater mainly led the way on kills.

    • Momentum shifted back to the Wake Forest side when Franke made a spike to cut the lead to one.

  • After Pittsburgh scored twice more, the Deacs signaled for a timeout.

    • Crawford laced an ace next.

  • A Wake Forest serving error and Panther kill put the finishing touches on the opening frame.

  • Pittsburgh took set one, 25-21.

    • Emma Farrell gathered seven digs during the period.

  • Pittsburgh opened set two in the same manner as the first, up 5-1.

  • Peyton Suess swung one down to start a 4-1 Deacon push, as the Panthers suffered a few errors.

    • A bad set by Pittsburgh allowed Wake Forest to tie the margin at 7-7.

  • Hits continued to be delivered by the visitors, using a spree to up their gain to 15-10.

    • Suess gave her squad another point on a kill.

  • Collective two-way play down the stretch, while clipping a 7-1 finish, gave Pittsburgh a 25-13 second-set win.

  • Wake Forest struck first in set three, with Franke throwing down a ball to put the Deacs up two before a couple of tied scores occurred.

  • Pittsburgh tried to keep things interesting, but Franke and Crawford surged on in their attacks.

    • The score sat 10-9 at the time, with Wake Forest in front.

  • A hitting error on the next play led to the first of four tied scores in a three-minute span.

  • After Baker spotted Ogogor for a slam, the Deacs found themselves up 16-15 and caused a timeout by the Panthers.

  • Crawford soon took over for a pair of punches, but Pittsburgh found its footing again to get in front, 20-17.

  • The Panthers suffered a serving error, but scored on its final four attempts in different ways to grab a 25-19 victory in set three, clinching the match.

  • Wake Forest fell, 3-0.
