Hildreth Records Triple-Double, Deacs Stay Undefeated at Home

11/26/2022 3:42:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Wake Forest reached a program feat during its Saturday victory.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Cameron Hildreth continued his exceptional start to the 2022-23 season on Saturday (Nov. 26), becoming the third all-time Wake Forest men's basketball individual to notch a triple-double, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. His line helped the Demon Deacons (6-1) power to a 97-70 home victory against the Hampton Pirates (1-5).

The Deacs stand at a perfect 5-0 mark in Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum this season for just the second time since 2013-14.

Hildreth joined elite company with former Deacs Alondes Williams and Tim Duncan to achieve such a feat. Last year, Williams posted 16 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in a home win over USC Upstate on Dec. 11, 2021. This is now the first time in program history that Wake Forest has had two different players notch triple-doubles in back-to-back seasons.

Damari Monsanto caught fire early in the contest and refused to cool off, erupting for a game-high 20 points and 6-of-9 shooting from three-point territory. The junior's point total was the highest of his Wake Forest tenure thus far. Monsanto also added four rebounds and three steals.

Andrew Carr and Tyree Appleby contributed 17 points apiece. It was Appleby's most efficient performance of the year, going 7-of-8 from the field and making all three of his attempts from beyond the arc.

Four Demon Deacons finished in double-figure scoring on Saturday for the fourth time this year. Wake Forest has had at least three players finish in double figures in every game this season.

As a unit, Wake Forest displayed collective efficiency in its scoring. The Deacs shot over 56 percent from the field and 51 percent from distance. Defensively, Wake Forest held Hampton to a 38.5 field goal percentage. The Pirates' 24 points in the first half was the second-lowest total Wake Forest has allowed in a half this season.

How It Happened
  • Hildreth got things started defensively and offensively for the Deacs, with a steal and layup to get the Deacs going early.
  • Monsanto followed suit with a jumper to give Wake Forest the 4-0 lead 90 seconds into the contest.
  • Carr became the third Deac on the board immediately after for the 6-3 lead two minutes in.
  • The Deacs opened the contest going 9-for-13 from the field, with five consecutive field goals, for an immediate 21-3 lead at the first media timeout.
    • All five Deacs contributed to a 17-0 run that forced four consecutive Hampton turnovers.
  • The run extended to 20-0 with a Monsanto three out of the timeout.
  • A dunk from Bradford, assisted by Hildreth, put the Deacs up 26-5 with 12 minutes left in the first half.
  • A three from Hildreth and dunk from Keller broke a Hampton run to keep the Deacs ahead by double digits with eight minutes remaining in the half.
  • Monsanto's second three of the half gave Wake Forest a 34-17 lead.
    • He followed it up with one more from beyond the arc for a game-high 11 points on three-of-five from three to put the Deacs ahead by 20.
  • With four minutes left in the half, Tyree Appleby was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range.
  • Another three from Monsanto gave the Deacs the 25-point lead, 47-22, with two minutes left in the half.
    • Hildreth got a floater to fall right after the half's final media timeout.
    • Carr reached double-figures in scoring on Wake Forest's next possession, knocking in a bank shot.
  • After Hildreth drew contact and made two tries at the free-throw line, the Deacs went into halftime up big, 53-24.
    • Wake Forest's defense impressed in holding Hampton to zero field goals during the final 3:43 of the first half.
  • Monsanto's hot shooting continued right into the second half, as he swished a triple from around the left wing to reach 17 points.
    • Appleby followed with a high floater before Carr rang in a corner three.
  • The Pirates scored on three of four possessions during the half's opening four minutes, still trailing 61-33.
  • Appleby, Carr and Hildreth all continued to add points to increase the Deacs' advantage to 75-38 over a 14-5 run over the next five minutes.
  • Hampton next answered with six consecutive points.
    • Bobi Klintman put an end to the boost after Jao Ituka found him open in the right corner for a three-pointer.
  • Hildreth connected with Klintman for a dunk in transition moments later, before the latter picked up a steal and earned a look at the charity stripe.
    • Wake Forest stayed in front, 80-48, with seven minutes of play remaining.
  • Hildreth officially secured his triple-double on an alley-oop dish to Bradford at the 5:54 mark in the second half.
    • Klintman kept the excitement elevated, putting on a spin move to finish for his ninth point.
  • Baskets by Ituka and RJ Kennah again put the Deacs ahead by 30 points.
  • The Pirates tallied eight late points, draining two trey balls and making free throws.
  • Grant van Beveren snatched an offensive rebound for a second-chance basket, giving his team its final points.
  • Wake Forest routed Hampton, 97-70.
Coach's Comments
"I thought we came out and shot the ball well. We had a good flow from the start. Our starters played well again after checking back into the game, and we extended the lead. We had a really good flow, offensively, today. For the most part we defended pretty well. They threw in some three-pointers there late. It's going to happen. Overall, I liked how we played, and you know, we have a tough part of our schedule coming up. So, we have to get ready to play at Wisconsin on Tuesday. I thought Cam had a very special performance. He's been playing really, really well. He does so many things, not just on offense, but he defends and takes charges. Alondes Williams got a triple-double last year and I don't know if I've had anybody else in my coaching career do that. Maybe once. So, that's a very special accomplishment and we're very proud of him." - head coach Steve Forbes
