Wake Forest Faces Virginia Tech on New Year’s Eve

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's basketball team will host the Virginia Tech Hokies on New Year's Eve inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for Noon ET on Saturday (Dec. 31) and the game will air live on regional Bally Sports networks.
The Demon Deacons (9-4, 1-1) are coming off an 81-70 win over then-No. 14 Duke at home before Christmas. The win marked the first over a ranked opponent in the Steve Forbes Era and the first over Duke since February 25, 2020. Wake Forest is now 7-0 at home for the second season in a row and just the second time since 2013-14 when the Deacs went 12-0. This is the first time Wake has had back-to-back 7-0 home starts since 2007-08 and 2008-09 when they went 12-0 and 8-0 inside LJVM.
Duke has held its opponents to an average of 40 percent from the field and 27 percent from three. Wake Forest finished 49.1 percent from the field and 36.8 from three-point range. Going into the game, Wake Forest's mark of 8.42 three-pointers made per game was the fifth-best mark in the ACC. The team added to its season total of 101 with seven against the Blue Devils. The Demon Deacons are just the third group to out-rebound the Blue Devils this season, pulling down 37 boards to Duke's 29.
For the sixth time this season, Tyree Appleby led the Deacs with 18 points and a game-high eight assists. He also recorded a game-high 13 makes on 14 attempts at the free throw line. For the ninth game in a row and 10th of the year, Cameron Hildreth recorded double figures in scoring, with 16 points. He also chipped in a game-high nine rebounds. Tuesday was the fifth time this season Hildreth has paced the Deacs on the glass. He went 7-of-15 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 at the free throw line.
For the sixth time this season, Damari Monsanto finished in double figures with 13 points and five rebounds. Matthew Marsh finished perfect from the field for the fifth time this season, going 5-for-5 to finish with 10 points. Last Tuesday (Dec. 20) was the fourth time this season the Englishman finished in double figures. Andrew Carr rounded out the Deacs in double figures with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field.
The Hokies, led by fourth-year head coach Mike Young, are 11-2 overall this season and have started league play with an 80-72 win over North Carolina in Blacksburg and a 70-65 overtime loss to Boston College in Chestnut Hill.
Sean Pedulla paces the Hokies in scoring, averaging 17.3 points per game, and Justyn Mutts leads the team on the glass with 7.9 rebounds per game. Virginia Tech's team field goal percentage of 48.1 leads the ACC and their assists/turnover ratio of 1.52 is second in the league behind No. 13 Virginia.
Saturday afternoon's tipoff inside The Joel is scheduled for Noon ET. The game will air live on regional Bally Sports networks.
