Deacs Look to End Week Strong Against Virginia

Wake Forest is looking to win its third consecutive game against the Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team will be in search of their 10th home win of the season and continue its winning ways against Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Deacs (12-12, 2-11 ACC) will be looking for their third consecutive win over the Cavaliers and their second consecutive win inside of LJVM Coliseum. Wake Forest and Virginia last linked up during the 2019-20 season with the Deacs pulling out a 62-56 victory on Jan. 16, 2020. Sophomore guard Jewel Spear still owns a healthy lead as the leading scorer in the conference, entering Sunday she has a 19.3 points per game average, which is 1.9 points better than the next closest player in the league.

The Cavaliers (3-19, 0-12 ACC) come into the game still in search of their first conference win of the season and on a 13-game losing streak overall. The Hoos last win this season came on Dec. 5, 2021 against George Washington. Graduate student guard Amandine Toi leads the team with 12.3 points per game while they have also had an emergence from sophomore guard/forward Mir McLean over the last five games. She has averaged 11.4 points and 6.4 rebounds over those games, her only of the season.

  • For the first time in conference play and just the second time overall in the 2021-22 season, the Demon Deacons ended the game with five or more players in double-figure scoring.

    • Sophomore guard Jewel Spear was the top scorer for the Demon Deacons for the 21st time in 24 games played this season. 11 of her team-high 18 points came in the fourth quarter as she went 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-3 from behind the arc in the final 10 minutes.

SPREADING THE WEALTH

Five players for Wake Forest finished with 10 or more points during Thursday's matchup against Clemson. This marked the first time in conference play this season that the Demon Deacons had five of their own finish with double-figure points.

Wake Forest has had four or more in each of the last two games with Spear, Becker and Harrison contributing double-figure points in each of the two games.

  • Ivana Raca and Gina Conti helped carry the load offensively for Wake Forest, notching 21 and 20 points, respectively. The Deacs knocked down 94.1 percent of their shots from the free throw line with 16 points coming from the charity stripe.

    • Christina Morra tallied a team-high 10 rebounds for Wake to go along with eight points. Alex Sharp grabbed eight boards while ending the game with a team-high four assists and adding six points.

STANDOUT STAT

Wake Forest has set their conference high in points in each of the last two games against Duke and Clemson. Additionally, their 77.0 points over the two games was more than 20 points higher than the 55.4 conference average heading into the Duke game.

UP NEXT

Wake Forest makes the midweek trip to the Triangle as the Demon Deacons are set to face No. 5 NC State for the first time this season. Thursday's tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum.
