No. 5 Wake Forest Set for Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 5 Wake Forest women's golf team is looking for its third title of the spring this week at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, California.

Almost every team in the field is ranked inside the top 50, with nine teams inside the top 20. Wake Forest is the second-highest ranked team in the field, with No. 2 Oregon also in the event. The Deacs are the highest-ranked ACC team in the country and are joined in Palos Verdes by two other top-25 ACC teams in Virginia (6) and Duke (21)

The Demon Deacons are coming off their fourth title of the year and second of the spring at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate (DRI) two weeks ago. The four team titles so far this year are tied for second-most in a season in program history. Freshman Carolina Chacarra has taken home the individual title at both events this spring and was named the ACC women's golfer of the month for February on March 2. She is the first freshman to win multiple titles since four-time All-American Stephanie Neill took home three titles her freshman season in 1991-92.

Last week at the Darius Rucker, the Deacs defended their 2020 titles at the Darius Rucker. The team took home the title at the 2020 and 2022 events and a Demon Deacon took home the individual title at both, Emilia Migliaccio in 2020 and Chacarra in 2022. The event was not played in 2021 due to COVID-19.

The Deacs started the second round of the DRI in a tie for fourth place and proceeded to have the lowest, and only under par, round of the day to surge to the top of the leaderboard entering the final 18 holes. With a steady round, Wake Forest maintained their top spot with the third-lowest round in the field on the final day.

Chacarra started her final round with four consecutive birdies over her second through fifth holes and recorded another on the par-four seventh before making the turn. She finished the day two under for a three-day score of four under at 209. She won the individual title by two strokes.

Rachel Kuehn finished T13 for her sixth top 25 finish in six events this year. A birdie on the par-five 15th helped her finish the day at two over for a three-day score of four over at 217. Lauren Walsh and Mimi Rhodes rounded out the Deacs in the top 20, coming in at T20 and six over at 219. This was the fourth top 20 finish in six events this year for both Walsh and Rhodes.

For the second event in a row, Wake Forest led the field in scoring on par-four holes. They also recorded the most birdies in the field, with 43 over three rounds. Chacarra continued to lead the field with 15 birdies over her three rounds.

Course Information
  • Palos Verdes Golf Club – Palos Verdes Estates, California
  • Par 71 – 6,017 yards
  • The course is a classic example of Thomas and Bell designs of the 1920's with extensive use of natural hazards. The premium is on accuracy rather than length. While not long in length, they used the natural terrain, barrancas, creeks, and hills while taking into account the prevailing westerly ocean breezes. The small greens, extensive bunkering, narrow fairways with strategically designed landing areas make the course a challenge for golfers of all levels.

Format
The event will be played over three days, with one round of 18-hole stroke play each day beginning on Sunday, March 13 and concluding on Tuesday, March 15. Tee times begin at 12 p.m. ET Sunday with Wake Forest starting off on hole one between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The Deacs will be paired with USC, Arizona State and Georgetown. Live scoring is available via Golfstat and results will be posted on GoDeacs.com at the conclusion of each round.
