Demon Deacons Lose Game Two Against Virginia

3/26/2022 7:53:00 PM | Baseball

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --  The No. 24 Wake Forest baseball team fell by a final score of 8-0 in the second game of their ACC series against No. 10 Virginia on Saturday at David F. Couch Ballpark.

The Demon Deacons (17-6, 3-5 ACC) walked eight times on Saturday, led by Michael Turconi, Jake Reinisch and Zach Sehgal with two apiece.

Tommy Hawke notched his second base hit of the series with a single up the middle to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth.

Virginia (22-1, 7-1 ACC) took a 1-0 lead after the second inning and combined for five runs in the fourth and fifth innings before adding a pair of unearned runs in the top of the eighth.

Josh Hartle made his sixth start of the season, tossing 6.0 innings, the third time this year the freshman as tossed made it through the sixth frame. Hartle punched out a trio of batters while throwing up zeros in the first, third and sixth innings.

Seth Keener pitched the seventh and eighth innings, striking out a pair while allowing no earned runs and just two hits.

Eric Adler struck out the side in the top of the ninth, increasing his season total to 21 in just 10.2 innings of work.

How It Happened

  • Josh Hartle retired the side in the top of the first, highlighted by an inning-ending strikeout.

  • The Cavaliers retired the Deacs in order in the bottom half of the inning.

    • Wake Forest forced the Cavalier's starting pitcher to toss 17 pitches in the inning.

  • Virginia scored the game's first run with an RBI-sacrifice fly in the top of the second.

    • After allowing a leadoff double, Hartle induced a groundout that moved Virginia's base runner to third.

    • Zach Sehgal fielded a ground ball and stepped on second for the third and final out of the frame.

  • Wake Forest got their first base runner of the game to open up the bottom of the second as Adam Cecere drew a leadoff walk. Three strikeouts ended the frame.

  • Hartle tossed his second 1-2-3 inning on just seven pitches, forcing two ground outs and a pop up to Zach Sehgal to make quick work of the Cavaliers in the top of the second.

  • Virginia added a two-run home run to open the third inning, increasing their lead to 3-0.

    • After the homer, Hartle induced a ground out for the first out of the inning. The left hander worked around a double with an unassisted ground out to Nick Kurtz at first and a two-out walk with a fly out to Cecere in left.

  • Michael Turconi notched Wake Forest's second leadoff double of the game, but the next three Demon Deacon batters were sat down to end the third.

  • The Deacs stranded a pair in the bottom of the fifth as Pierce Bennett and Sehgal tallied back-to-back walks with one out. A strike out and fly out ended the inning.

  • Hartle notched his third zero of his sixth start of the season, working around a one-out walk with consecutive fly outs.

  • Turconi drew his second walk of the game and advanced to second due to a Virginia balk with one out. Back-to-back strikeouts concluded the scoring threat.

  • Seth Keener struck out a Cavalier to end a scoreless top of the seventh.

    • After walking the leadoff batter, Keener forced consecutive pop ups before his first strikeout.

  • Jake Reinisch notched Wake Forest's sixth walk of the game to lead off the inning, but a fielder's choice and two strikeouts concluded the bottom of the seventh.

  • The Cavaliers extended their lead to 8-0 with two unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning.

    • Keener picked up his second punch out of his relief appearance for the opening out of the game.

    • A fielding error allowed Virginia to place its first run of the frame before a ground-rule double brought home the Cavalier's second run.

  • Kurtz was hit by a pitch to leadoff the bottom half of the inning. A fielder's choice and strikeout ended the eighth.

  • Eric Adler took over on the mound in the top of the ninth and struck out the side.

  • Reinisch and Sehgal drew their second walks of the game in the bottom half of the inning before Tommy Hawke singled to second base to load the bases with two outs. Virginia induced a groundout to win game two of the series, 8-0.

Words from Walter
"Not a lot went right today. We've got to find a way to come out and win tomorrow. I still like our club. I don't like our club any less today than I did two days ago. We knew at some point this year we were going to lose two in a row and it happened. It doesn't matter if you lose 3-2 or 8-0. This is a good ball club and I have no doubt we will come out tomorrow ready to play."
