No. 23 Wake Forest Battles Clemson this Weekend at The Couch

Fresh off their fifth-straight win and second-straight ACC series victory, the Deacs welcome the Tigers for a three-game set on April 15-17.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 23 Wake Forest baseball team hosts Clemson this weekend at David F. Couch Ballpark for a three-game ACC series on April 15-17.

The Demon Deacons (26-7, 9-6 ACC) head into their sixth conference series of the season fresh off their fifth-straight victory after defeating UNC Greensboro, 10-7, on Tuesday night. 

The Deacs currently sit 12th in the RPI and have won their last two ACC series, claiming the first two games against Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. and sweeping Big Four rival Duke for the first time since 2008. 

The series opener on Friday is set for a 7 p.m. start and will be broadcasted live on ACC Network with Matt Schick and Gregg Olson on the call. 

On Saturday, the Deacs will host a charity game to benefit The Parenting PATH, a local organization that supports parents, strengthens families and creates more stable communities.
 

Wake Forest will don light yellow jerseys in game two of the series. These special-edition jerseys includes a pinwheel, the national symbol for child abuse prevention. 

Fans will have the opportunity to bid on the special-edition, game-worn jerseys through our website until 11:59 p.m. on the night of the game. The starting bid for each jersey is $100.

The series finale on Sunday is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch. 

The final two games of the series can be streamed on ACC Network Extra.

Last Time Out 
The No. 23 Wake Forest baseball team won its fifth-straight game, defeating UNC Greensboro, 10-7, Tuesday at UNCG Baseball Stadium. 

After defeating the Spartans, 23-3, on Feb. 22, the Demon Deacons claimed the season series over the UNC Greensboro and their 17th non-conference victory of the season with timely hitting, compiling a .467 average (7-of-15) and seven RBIs with two outs. 

Trailing 3-0, Wake Forest took hold of their first lead with a run in the second and three runs with two outs in the third thanks to a RBI-single from Michael Turconi and a two-run home run from Brendan Tinsman.

With the game tied after four innings, the Deacs plated three runs again in the fifth with an RBI-double from Brock Wilken and RBI-singles from Jake Reinisch and Pierce Bennett.

Danny Corona came up clutch in the top of the ninth with a two-out, two-RBI double to push Wake Forest's lead to four heading into the final half inning.

Opponent & Series history       
Wake Forest and Clemson have squared off 189 times prior to this year's series. The Deacs trail the all-time series 137-52.                                                                                 

Top Notes

  • Head coach Tom Walter, the second-winningest coach in program history, won his 350th game at the helm of the Wake Forest baseball program with the 16-11 series finale victory against Duke on Sunday. 

  • The Deacs were ranked No. 23 in Baseball America's latest top-25 poll, their highest ranking of the season. 

  • Wake Forest has won three ACC series this season, taking Friday and Saturday contests at Georgia Tech and Boston College while sweeping Duke this past weekend for their first home conference series win of 2022. 

  • With their 15-10 win on Friday night against the Eagles, the 2022 Demon Deacons reeled in its 20th victory in just 26 games, the second fastest since 2000 and the fastest in the head coach Tom Walter era. 

  • Wake Forest has the second-most wins (25) in the ACC and is tied for the second-most conference victories (9). The Deacs have picked up five wins against top-15 opponents, four coming in ACC play. 

  • Overall, Wake Forest has outscored their opponents 322-160 this season with a team batting average of .322 with a .436 on-base percentage  and slugging percentage of .538. Wake Forest's team ERA of 3.91 is sixth in the ACC. 

  • Wake Forest has one of the top offenses in the entire nation and ACC as the Deacs rank in the top five in the conference in every offensive category, highlighted by a conference-best 212 walks and .436 on-base percentage. Additionally, the Deacs rank in the top 10 nationally in on-base percentage (second), walks (third), runs (fourth), batting average (fifth), slugging percentage (eighth) and home runs (ninth). 

  • The Demon Deacon offense has set multiple program records this season:

    • The Demon Deacons exploded in their second game against Georgia Tech, setting a new program record for most runs (27) and hits (28) in an ACC game. 

      • Wake Forest's 28 hits rank tied for third in program history, while their 27 runs stand as the sixth-most runs scored in a single game.

  • On Sunday against the Blue Devils, Wake Forest scored six runs in the third inning to take an 8-0 lead. The scoring outburst marked the 16th inning this season with at least five runs. 

  • Wake Forest has been patient at the plate as the Deacs have been walked 212 times, the most in the ACC and the third most in the entire nation. The Deacs have been walked at least 10 times in five games this season. In all but one of those contests, Wake Forest has notched double-digit hits, while scoring double-digit runs in three of the five instances. 

  • On the mound, Wake Forest's starting pitchers have combined for 141 innings with 135 strikeouts and just 70 earned runs allowed. The Demon Deacons have been able to rely on their bullpen as three relievers have given up five runs or less this season. 

  • 10 Demon Deacons have notched at least 10 base hits this season, led by freshman Nick Kurtz with 46. Additionally, six Demon Deacons have hit at least five home runs. 

  • Camden Minacci has been nails coming out of the Wake Forest bullpen. Minacci made appearances in three-consecutive games last week, tossing four scoreless and hitless innings with four strikeouts to earn three saves. In 26 innings, the sophomore has struck out 39 batters while only allowing three earned runs. Minacci's strikeouts rank second on the team, while he sports the lowest ERA (1.04) on the squad. 

  • Rhett Lowder heads into the weekend as the only pitcher in the ACC with seven wins (just one of eight in the nation) as the Friday night starter holds an ERA of 2.30 with 50 strikeouts compared to just 16 walks. After tallying the third-most strikeouts by a freshman (78) in Wake Forest history last season, Lowder needs just 22 more punchouts to reach 150 career Ks.

  • Brock Wilken has been on a tear since the beginning of April.  In eight games, Wilken holds an average of .382 with 13 hits while leading the team with four home runs, 17 RBIs and a .794 slugging percentage. 

  • Brendan Tinsman has homered in each of Wake Forest's last three games as the redshirt junior has hit a team and career-best 12 long files this season. Additionally, Tinsman leads the Deacs in slugging (.707) and bases (87). 

  • Jake Reinisch has reached base in 32-straight games and leads Wake Forest with an on-base percentage of .511 and 33 walks. Heading into this upcoming weekend, Reinisch has driven in a run in each of Wake Forest's last four games and is on a team-best eight-game hit streak.
