Vanoppen Qualifies for Quarterfinals on Friday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Graduate student Thomas Vanoppen qualified for the 1500m quarterfinals on Friday for a chance at a berth to the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
After a slight weather delay, Vanoppen began the race in the middle of the pack for the first 800m before making a surge on the bell lap to the front of the pack in the fourth heat. He earned an auto-qualifier position with the first place finish in his heat. He paced to a 3:45.90 mark.
To start the day, Andrew White threw a personal best of 60.83m in the hammer throw, which improves his No. 3 mark in school history. And to cap off the day, Aaron Las Heras nearly punched his ticket to Eugene with a 16th place finish, missing the top-12 cut by four places.
