Deacs Fall to Bulldogs in NCAA Second Round

Sunday was the fourth consecutive tournament involving the two programs facing in the Round of 32.

ATHENS, Ga. – Taking on the challenge of playing a host squad, No. 23 Wake Forest women's tennis (17-11) faced the No. 13 Georgia Bulldogs (19-6) in the 2022 NCAA Tournament's second round on Sunday (May 8). The Demon Deacons ultimately were defeated in a 4-0 loss, marking the end of their spring postseason run as a team.
 

Tournament Notes

  • Wake Forest has now reached the tournament's Round of 32 for a total of 16 times throughout program history.

    • The Deacs and Georgia have now met in this same round for four straight NCAA tournaments (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022). 

      • The 2020 tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • In the first round on Saturday (May 7), Wake Forest knocked off No. 40 Northwestern in a 4-2 decision.

    • The win capped a season sweep over the Wildcats for the Deacs, who defeated Northwestern back on Jan. 29 in the '2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend,' held in Raleigh, North Carolina.

  • During the first-round team win, Carolyn Campana became the first Deac this season to clinch a team match victory in a three-set performance, as the senior notched a national solo win over No. 82 Clarissa Hand.

  • No. 5 Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth bumped their season doubles record to a noteworthy 15-5 mark in the Northwestern win.

  • Wake Forest tallied seven wins over ranked opponents during the 2022 spring.
     

How it Happened

  • Doubles play was even on courts one and two, as No. 5 Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth and No. 27 Samantha Martinelli/Casie Wooten found themselves in 3-3 tied scores apiece.

  • Georgia won in third doubles, 6-2.

  • Martinelli and Wooten combined to pick up the seventh game played in their match, narrowly leading 4-3.

  • Brylin and Killingsworth traded games with the Bulldogs to again tie the margin, 4-4.

    • Another series of back-and-forth games led to a 5-5 resting score.

  • Georgia completed two lasting rallies to grab a 6-4 win in second doubles, notching the first team point of the afternoon.

  • Anna Campana had the best singles start in the Deacon bunch, winning three of her first four games in the opening set.

  • After dropping her first game, Wooten played with some ferocity in the second to create a 3-3 tie.

  • The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 3-0 after taking wins in fourth and fifth singles.

  • A poised showing by Anna Campana helped her hang on for a 7-5 finish in the first period on court two.

  • Clinching over in first singles gave Georgia the second round victory.

  • Wake Forest fell, 4-0.
