Junior forward Anna Gwiazdzinski’s tying score in the 24th-minute highlights Wake Forest’s final match of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -  The No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey team fell 3-1 against No. 3 Michigan in ACC-Big Ten Challenge Sunday afternoon inside Kentner Stadium.

Trailing by one goal after the first period, the Demon Deacons (0-2) received an equalizing score in the 24th minute. Anna Gwiazdzinski took a Hannah Maxwell pass and fired the ball past the Wolverines' (1-1) goalkeeper to tie the match at one.

The goal from the Indiana transfer marked the first of her Wake Forest career, while Maxwell recorded a first of her own, as she earned her first assist of the young season. Over the course of her collegiate career, the Forty Fort, Pa. native has recorded three assists.

The match remained tied for the next 29 minutes of play as the Wolverines and Demon Deacons traded shots for the majority of the match.

Michigan ultimately pulled away in the fourth period, scoring a pair of goals in the final eight minutes of the match to solidify their 3-1 victory.

Wake Forest freshman goalkeeper Ellie Todd tallied a game-high five saves in her first collegiate start, playing all 60 minutes.

How It Happened

  • Wake Forest opened the match applying pressure and taking control of possession for the opening minutes of the match.

  • Michigan found the back of the net first, taking a 1-0 lead at the 11-minute mark.

    • The goal came after the match's first corner opportunity.

  • Wake Forest quickly responds by earning a corner of their own, taken by Grace Delmotte, at the 9:45 mark.

    • The resulting shot by Sky Caron was blocked by a Michigan defender.

  • Ellie Todd, in her first career collegiate start, notched her first save with 7:16 remaining in the first period.

  • Wake Forest's defense was able to hold off the opposition for the remainder of the period, despite a lot of time played in their territory.

  • A Grace Delmotte shot at the 13-minute mark in the second period results in a Wake corner.

    • Off the corner, Sky Caron's shot was saved by the Michigan keeper.

  • Ellie Todd makes two subsequent saves with 12 minutes left in the second period.

    • Shots were a result of Michigan's second corner of the match.

  • Wake Forest tied the match at 1-1 as Anna Gwiazdzinski fired the ball into the back of the net following a pass from Hannah Maxwell

    • Gwiazdzinski's score was the first of her Wake Forest career, while Maxwell dished out the first assist of her junior campaign.

  • A little more than a minute later, Wake Forest continued the pressure as Immie Gillgrass's shot flew just wide of the net.

  • Wake Forest's end of half push results in the two teams being knotted at 1 going into halftime. Both teams played an even match through the first 30 minutes as Wake Forest and Michigan were able to take six and seven shots, respectively.

  • Grace Delmotte took Wake's third corner of the game three minutes into the second half.

    • The resulting shot by Abby Carpenter was blocked by a Michigan defender.

  • The match remained tied through 45 minutes of back-and-forth play.

    • The teams each attempted just one shot in the third period.

  • Michigan attempted to strike early in the 4th period, but Todd denied the attempt, picking up a huge save.

  • Gwiazdzinski continued to attack, firing her second shot of the match on goal.

  • Todd continued to play tough in the goal, halting back-to-back Michigan attempts in the 4th period.

  • Michigan overtook the lead (2-1) with a breakaway goal with just under eight minutes remaining.

  • The Wolverines extended their lead and clinched a 3-1 victory with their second goal (55th-minute) of the final quarter.

Quotables
Head Coach Jennifer Averill - "We knew that Michigan was stronger than they showed against North Carolina so give credit to them. They executed a really good game plan and exploited us when we fell asleep. I'm disappointed in our production in our attacking 50, but what a great game to utilize and tighten up our press while also learning where some areas are that we need to make some adjustments in."
