No. 20 Wake Forest Returns to Kentner for Friday Contest Versus Lafayette

The No. 20 Demon Deacons continues its season-opening homestand with a non-conference match against the Leopards inside Kentner Stadium on Friday.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –The No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey team continues its season-opening homestand with a non-conference match against the Leopards on Friday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. inside Kentner Stadium.

Friday's non-conference clash against the Leopards (1-1) can be streamed live on ACC Network Extra and marks just the second time ever these two teams will face off. 

In the first matchup on Sept. 4, 2010, the Deacs (0-2) defeated the Leopards inside Kentner Stadium by a final score of 3-2.

Last Time Out
The Demon Deacons fell 3-1 against No. 3 Michigan in ACC-Big Ten Challenge in their last match on Sunday, Aug. 28 inside Kentner Stadium.

Trailing by one goal after the first period, the Demon Deacons (0-2) received an equalizing score in the 24th minute. Anna Gwiazdzinski took a Hannah Maxwell pass and fired the ball past the Wolverines' (1-1) goalkeeper to tie the match at one.

In the team's season opener against No. 5 Iowa on Friday, Aug. 26, Ashley Hart found the back of the net in the 55th minute as she dove and tipped a Sky Caron bullet into the back of the net to tie the match and force extra time.

  • The Wake Forest field hockey team was ranked No. 20 in the 2022 Preseason National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll.This marks the 37th-straight NFCHA poll the Deacs have been featured in. Since the poll's inception in 2018, Wake Forest has appeared in 40 of the 41 weekly polls. Last season, Wake Forest opened the season at No. 11. In 2020, Wake Forest rose to No. 9 for two-straight polls from April 6-20, its highest NFHCA ranking ever.

  • Head coach Jennifer Averill is in her 31st season at the helm of the Wake Forest field hockey program, amassing an overall record of 396-220-3 as a Demon Deacon and an overall mark of 416-252-6 in 32 years of coaching.

  • Wake Forest returned 18 players from last year's 2021 squad and welcomed eight newcomers to the program. The returners made 190 appearances last season, eight of which appeared in all 17 matches. 

  • All-American Meike Lanckohr was named to the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason All-ACC Field Hockey Team, as announced by the league Monday afternoon. Lanckohr received All-America and All-ACC first team accolades for the second-straight season after posting a team-best and career-high 20 points with a career-high nine goals and two assists in 2021. Overall, the Voerendaal, Netherlands native finished tied for second in the ACC in goals, while ranking third in points per game (1.54).

  • Tori Glaister made her 28th career start in goal for the Deacs against the Hawkeyes in the season opener, tallying a game-high four saves. Last season, Glaister posted a career-best seven wins and made a career-high 53 saves, registering a 61.6 percent save percentage (150 shots faced). The London, England native allowed just two goals or less in 13 matches while registering multiple saves in 11 contests while allowing just 1.1 goals per game in  Demon Deacon wins.

  • Freshman goalie Ellie Todd made her first career start in Sunday's contest against the Wolverines, tallying a game-high five saves in 60 minutes of action. Todd heads into the second weekend of the season ranked fifth in the ACC in stops. 

  • Wake Forest executed a penalty corner in the 55th minute of their season opener for their first goal of 2022 as Ashley Hart dove and tipped a Sky Caron bullet into the back of the net to force extra time. The goal marked Hart's third score of her career while both Grace Delmotte and Caron tallied assists on the equalizing score. This was Caron's first assist in the Old Gold & Black, while Delmotte dished out the seventh assist of her collegiate career. 

  • Anna Gwiazdzinski took a Hannah Maxwell pass and fired the ball past the Wolverines' goalkeeper to tie Sunday's match at one. The goal from the Indiana transfer marked the first of her Wake Forest career, while Maxwell recorded a first of her own, as she earned her first assist of the young season. Over the course of her collegiate career, the Forty Fort, Pa. native has recorded three assists.

  • Grace Delmotte played for Field Hockey Canada's 2022 Women's World Cup roster. Delmotte was one of 18-athletes selected to represent Canada in the country's first World Cup appearance in 28 years. Canada defeated Team USA for the bronze medal at the 2022 Pan American Cup to qualify for the World Cup. Delmotte was one of four recent graduates of Team Canada's Junior National Program to land on the World Cup roster. The junior earned her first senior cap in her first World Cup action on opening night against Spain. On July 7, Delmotte found the back of the net to put Canada 1-0 just five minutes into its match against Argentina. 

  • Lee Ann Gordon competed with the U-21 Field Hockey US Women's National Team squad in the Uniphar 5-Nations Tournament in Dublin, Ireland as Team USA took home a bronze medal. On July 26, Nat Friedman was named to the 2022-23 U.S. Women's National Team, heading to Charlotte for training camp on Sunday, July 31-Thursday, Aug. 4.

The Deacs head out on the road for the first time in 2022 against UC Davis (Sept. 9) and Cal (Sept. 11) before returning home for their last home non-conference match of September against Richmond on Sept. 16.
