Six different Deacs found the back of the net in the Friday victory, highlighted by four first-half goals.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey team captured its first win of the 2022 season, defeating Lafayette, 6-1, Friday inside Kentner Stadium.
Wake Forest (1-2) took hold of a 4-1 first half lead and never looked back as preseason All-ACC honoree Meike Lanckohr (2nd minute), junior Anna Gwiazdzinski (7th minute), graduate student Sky Caron (11th minute) and junior Hannah Maxwell (29th minute) notched goals in the opening half.
Overall, the Deacs controlled the opening 30 minutes of action, holding a 12-3 advantage in shots over Lafayette (1-2) while taking the only six corners of the half.
A pair of Wake Forest's opening goals were scored on successful corner opportunities taken by Grace Delmotte. Both Delmotte and Lee Ann Gordon tallied two assists in the first half, tying their career highs.
Additionally, the Demon Deacons registered four goals in one half for the first time since Oct. 28, 2018 versus Davidson.
Wake Forest continued to apply pressure and control the match for the final 30 minutes of play. Sophomore Ashley Hart (39th minute) and senior Maggie Dickman (49th minute) added unanswered second half goals to ultimately secure the Deacs a 6-1 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Ellie Todd made her second-straight start, tallying one save in 30 minutes before junior Tori Glaister took over in goal for the second half.
How It Happened

Wake Forest continued the pressure at the three-minute mark with a shot on goal by Brooke McCusker.
-
Wake Forest struck again just moments later, taking a 2-0 advantage at the seven-minute mark of the match.

-
Hannah Maxwell broke away from the defense and pushed the ball past the Lafayette goalie for an unassisted goal with just two seconds remaining in the half, pushing the Demon Deacon lead to 4-1 at the intermission.
-
This marked Maxwell's first goal of 2022.
-
-
At the break, Wake Forest outshot the Leopards 12-3, while taking the only corners of the opening 30 minutes of play (six).

Head Coach Jennifer Averill - "It was really nice to see the application we talked about pregame activated in the first quarter. That was by far our best performance of the season. It's nice for them to get results and some encouragement of being able to finish like we did. I'm super proud of every single member of the squad being able to contribute today."
