
No. 18 Wake Forest Heads West for First Road Contests of 2022

The Demon Deacons take on UC Davis (Sept. 9) and Cal (Sept. 11) in their first road matches of the new campaign.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Coming off a 6-1 victory against Lafayette last week, the No. 18 Wake Forest field hockey team heads out on the road for the first time this season for a pair of matchups at UC Davis and Cal.
The Deacs take on the Aggies in the team's first road match of the season on Friday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. ET before hitting the turf against Cal on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. ET. Sunday's match can be streamed on calbears.com.

Wake Forest holds a perfect 10-0 mark against Cal, with the last matchup between the teams coming on Sept. 25, 2016 when the Demon Deacons earned a 6-2 victory inside Kentner Stadium. Wake Forest last traveled to Cal in 2007.
Last Time Out
Then-No. 20 Wake Forest captured its first win of the 2022 season, defeating Lafayette, 6-1, on Sept. 2 inside Kentner Stadium. Wake Forest took hold of a first half lead and never looked back as preseason All-ACC honoree Meike Lanckohr (2nd minute), junior Anna Gwiazdzinski (7th minute), graduate student Sky Caron (11th minute) and junior Hannah Maxwell (29th minute) notched goals in the opening half.
Overall, the Deacs controlled the opening 30 minutes of action, holding a 12-3 advantage in shots over Lafayette while taking the only six corners of the half. A pair of Wake Forest's opening goals were scored on successful corner opportunities taken by Grace Delmotte.
Both Delmotte and Lee Ann Gordon tallied two assists in the first half, tying their career highs.
Additionally, the Demon Deacons registered four goals in one half for the first time since Oct. 28, 2018 versus Davidson.
Wake Forest continued to apply pressure and control the match for the final 30 minutes of play. Sophomore Ashley Hart (39th minute) and senior Maggie Dickman (49th minute) added unanswered second half goals to ultimately secure the Deacs a 6-1 victory.

The Wake Forest field hockey team was ranked No. 18 in the second 2022 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll of the season on Tuesday. This marked the 38th-straight NFCHA poll the Deacs have been featured in. Since the poll's inception in 2018, Wake Forest has appeared in 41 of the 42 weekly polls.

Head coach Jennifer Averill is in her 31st season at the helm of the Wake Forest field hockey program, amassing an overall record of 397-220-3 as a Demon Deacon and an overall mark of 417-252-6 in 32 years of coaching.

Wake Forest returns 18 players from last year's 2021 squad and welcomes eight newcomers to the program. The returners made 190 appearances last season, eight of which appeared in all 17 matches.

The Demon Deacons head into the third weekend of the season as one of three ACC teams to score six goals in a match while Wake Forest's 18 points (six goals and six assists) against the Leopards rank tied for an ACC lead.

Grace Delmotte currently sits as the conference leader in assists per game (1.00) while also being tied for the most assists across the league. The junior dished out a career-high tying two assists against Lafayette on a pair of corners, marking the second multi-hit assist performance of her career. Delmotte played for Field Hockey Canada's 2022 Women's World Cup roster. Delmotte was one of 18-athletes selected to represent Canada in the country's first World Cup appearance in 28 years. Canada defeated Team USA for the bronze medal at the 2022 Pan American Cup to qualify for the World Cup. Delmotte was one of four recent graduates of Team Canada's Junior National Program to land on the World Cup roster. The junior earned her first senior cap in her first World Cup action on opening night against Spain. On July 7, Delmotte found the back of the net to put Canada 1-0 just five minutes into its match against Argentina.

All-American and preseason All-ACC honoree Meike Lanckohr found the back of the net to get the scoring started in the Deacs' 6-1 win versus Lafayette before dishing out an assist in Wake Forest's third goal for a game-high tying three points. Lanckohr received All-America and All-ACC first team accolades for the second-straight season in 2021 after posting a team-best and career-high 20 points with a career-high nine goals and two assists in 2021. Overall, the Voerendaal, Netherlands native finished tied for second in the ACC in goals, while ranking third in points per game (1.54).

Freshman goalie Ellie Todd earned her first victory of the 2022 season against the Leopards, tallying one save in 30 minutes of action. Todd made her first career start in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge against the Wolverines, tallying a game-high five saves in 60 minutes of action.

Tori Glaister made her 28th career start in goal for the Deacs against the Hawkeyes in the season opener, tallying a game-high four saves. Last season, Glaister posted a career-best seven wins and made a career-high 53 saves, registering a 61.6 percent save percentage (150 shots faced). The London, England native allowed just two goals or less in 13 matches while registering multiple saves in 11 contests while allowing just 1.1 goals per game in Demon Deacon wins.

After registering goals in Wake Forest's last match, Ashley Hart and Anna Gwiazdzinski lead the team in goals (two) and points (four).

Lee Ann Gordon, who dished out a career-high tying two assists in Friday's win, competed with the U-21 Field Hockey US Women's National Team squad in the Uniphar 5-Nations Tournament in Dublin, Ireland as Team USA took home a bronze medal. On July 26, Nat Friedman was named to the 2022-23 U.S. Women's National Team, heading to Charlotte for training camp on Sunday, July 31-Thursday, Aug. 4.
