No. 15 Wake Forest Opens ACC Play Friday at No. 2 North Carolina; Travels to App State Sunday

The Deacs head into the fifth week of the season on a five-match win streak, the program's first since 2015. Over that streak, the Deacs have outscored opponents 23-5.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Currently on the program's first five-match win streak since 2015, the No. 15 Wake Forest field hockey team travels to Chapel Hill for its ACC Opener against No. 2 North Carolina before concluding its road swing with a non-conference matchup at App State. 

The Big Four, top-20 matchup between the Deacs (5-2, 0-0 ACC) and Tar Heels (7-0, 1-0 ACC) is slated for a 4 p.m. start on Friday, Sept. 23. A stream will be available on ACC Network Extra.

Wake Forest then travels to Boone to face off against the Mountaineers (3-3, 0-1 MAC) on Sunday, Sept. 25 at noon. The match can be streamed on App State Athletics' twitch. 

Opponent & Series History                                                                                                              
Wake Forest trails the all-time series with North Carolina by a tally of 58-21-3. The first matchup between the two Big Four rivals came in 1972 in Winston-Salem. 

The Deacs hold a 38-16-1 all-time mark against the Mountaineers, defeating the in-state foe 29-straight times dating back to the 1992 season.

Then-No. 17 Wake Forest defeated No. 23 Ohio State, 1-0, at the Buckeye Varsity Field on Sunday, Sept. 18, marking the program's first five-match win streak since the 2015 season.

Following a scoreless opening 45 minutes of play that saw Wake Forest hold advantages in shots (12-4), shots on goal (6-1) and penalty corners (7-4), Brooke McCusker came up clutch. The sophomore found the back of the net two minutes into the fourth quarter to break the scoreless tie and ultimately secure the road victory. 

The game-winning score marked McCusker's first goal of the 2022 campaign while Nat Friedman dished out her first assist of the season on the play. 

Ellie Todd made her sixth-straight start in goal for Wake Forest, tallying 60 minutes of game action. The freshman made two saves on Ohio State's pair of shots on goal for the Deacs' second shutout of the season.

Overall, Wake Forest outshot Ohio State 17-6 and the Demon Deacons offensive attack led to 11 penalty corners, the fifth-straight match with double-digit corner opportunities.

  • The Wake Forest field hockey team was ranked No. 15 in the fourth 2022 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll.This marked the 40th-straight NFCHA poll the Deacs have been featured in. Since the poll's inception in 2018, Wake Forest has appeared in 43 of the 44 weekly polls. 

  • Jennifer Averill secured her 400th win as the head coach of Wake Forest Field Hockey on Friday, Sept. 16 with the Deacs' 4-3 victory against Richmond. 

    • In 31 seasons at the helm of the program, Averill holds an overall record of 401-220-3 and an overall mark of 421-252-6 in 32 years of coaching.

  • Wake Forest heads into the fifth week of the season on a five-match win streak, the program's first since 2015. Over that streak, the Deacs have outscored opponents 23-5. 

    • Additionally, Wake Forest has scored 13 of its 23 goals in the first half in those victories while holding opponents to one goal or less in four matches and shutting out two non-conference foes. 

  • The Demon Deacons are one of two schools in the ACC to net six goals in three matches this season and rank third among conference opponents in scoring. Additionally, Wake Forest leads the ACC in penalty corners (60) while ranking second in assists and goals off corner opportunities. 

  • Wake Forest's win streak has been fueled by fast starts as 13 of their 23 goals have come in the first half. 

  • Overall, the Deacs have outscored opponents 10-1 in the first quarter of matches this season and have scored first in every match throughout the win streak. 

  • Grace Delmotte currently sits as the conference leader in assists (6) and assists per game (0.86). 

    • The junior dished out a career-high tying two assists in back-to-back matches against Lafayette and UC Davis before notching an assist in her third-straight match against Cal last Sunday. 

    • Delmotte played for Field Hockey Canada's 2022 Women's World Cup roster. Delmotte was one of 18-athletes selected to represent Canada in the country's first World Cup appearance in 28 years. Canada defeated Team USA for the bronze medal at the 2022 Pan American Cup to qualify for the World Cup. Delmotte was one of four recent graduates of Team Canada's Junior National Program to land on the World Cup roster. 

    • The junior earned her first senior cap in her first World Cup action on opening night against Spain. 

    • On July 7, Delmotte found the back of the net to put Canada 1-0 just five minutes into its match against Argentina. 

  • All-American Meike Lanckor was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Sept. 13. Lanckohr earned the second conference player of the week nod of her career after leading the Deacs in a perfect 2-0 weekend on the Wake Forest's West Coast road trip with a team-high 12 points, netting a team-high five goals and two assists. 

    • The senior is tied for an ACC-best 1.00 goal per game while tying for fourth in overall goals (6).  

    • Lanckohr received All-America and All-ACC first team accolades for the second-straight season in 2021 after posting a team-best and career-high 20 points with a career-high nine goals and two assists in 2021. 

    • Overall, the Voerendaal, Netherlands native finished tied for second in the ACC in goals, while ranking third in points per game (1.54). 

  • A number of Deacs have been able to net goals through the first seven matches as six players have scored multiple goals this season:

  • Lee Ann Gordon competed with the U-21 Field Hockey US Women's National Team squad in the Uniphar 5-Nations Tournament in Dublin, Ireland as Team USA took home a bronze medal. 

  • On July 26, Nat Friedman was named to the 2022-23 U.S. Women's National Team, heading to Charlotte for training camp on Sunday, July 31-Thursday, Aug. 4.

Wake Forest returns to Kentner Stadium for a four-match homestand, beginning with another Big Four matchup against Duke on Friday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. in its conference home opener.
