CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Wake Forest women's tennis team completed the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Carolina Regionals on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 22), following an impressive run from senior Mia Ahmad and freshman Sankavi Gownder in the A2 doubles draw, which came to an end in the final match.
The freshman-senior duo began play earlier this week on Thursday (Oct. 19) with a win in the Round of 32. The following day, after advancing to the Round of 16 due to an opponent withdrawal, Ahmad/Gownder knocked off Furman's pair of Snyder/Thornton (8-5) and booked a spot in the semifinals.
On Saturday (Oct. 21), Ahmad/Gownder defeated Broadfoot/Rencheli of NC State (1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (9)) and clinched a finals berth. The pair fell in the championship match (1-6, 1-6) to No. 53 Tran/Forbes of North Carolina on Sunday.
Another Wake Forest doubles pair, senior Brooke Killingsworth and graduate student Marcella Cruz, also made a deep run in Chapel Hill, as the two picked up wins over Presbyterian's Piedra/Delaney (8-3) and Duke's Kimchi/Berankova (8-6) in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals, respectively. On Saturday, they fell in the semifinals to Abrams/Zyryanova of NC State (2-6, 6-4, 0-1 (8-10)).
In singles, three Demon Deacons picked up wins in the round of 32. No. 44 Casie Wooten, defeated SC State's Hind Semlali (6-3, 2-6, 6-4) as she continued her strong fall season.
In the A1 draw, sophomore Whitley Pate downed Campbell's Eeca Ristola (6-4, 2-6, 6-0), while Gownder advanced past Elon's Helen Sarikulaya (6-1, 5-2, retirement) in the A2 draw.

"Really impressive weekend from Mia and Sankavi reaching the doubles final by winning 4 matches," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. It was a good weekend for the whole group. I thought we played much more disciplined than we did a month ago in our first event. That means we are doing good work day-to-day. Now, we need to continue to make that progress to be ready for January."
