WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest will open the 2023-24 men's basketball season this Sunday (Oct. 29) by hosting the University of Alabama for a charity exhibition game inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum at 1 p.m. ET.
In addition to this being an opportunity for Deacon Nation and the entire Winston-Salem and Triad Community to get a sneak peek at the Demon Deacons men's hoops squad ahead of their season, all proceeds from this game will support stroke research at the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Stroke Center.
Admission to the game will be free, with a suggested voluntary donation of $20 accepted at entry into Joel Coliseum. Additionally, there is an online donation form available now for donations to stroke research.
"Our players and staff are excited to open the season with this exhibition game against a nationally-ranked Alabama squad and support a great organization like the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Stroke Center," head coach Steve Forbes said. "As everyone in our community knows, my wife Johnetta is on the long, hard road to recovery after she suffered a stroke a few months ago. I am so grateful to my children, family, friends and the entire Wake Forest and Winston-Salem community for their outpouring of support since her medical event. We are excited for our community to see our players perform and to drive awareness and help support stroke research for this incredible organization and partner."
Wake Forest is coming off its first appearance in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament since 2009. With an overall record of 19-14 last season and 25-10 in 2022, Wake Forest has had back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2008-09 (24-7) and 2009-10 (20-11). Wake Forest has had back-to-back seasons with double-digit ACC wins for the first time since the 1995-96 (12-4) and 1996-97 (11-5) seasons. The Deacs also had back-to-back 10-0 starts at home for the first time in program history during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.
Since the start of the 2021-22 season, Wake Forest is 31-5 inside LJVM. During that time, Wake Forest won 15-straight games inside Joel Coliseum, which was the longest home-win streak since the Deacs went 22-0 during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. Wake Forest was the first ACC school to reach 31 home wins during the two seasons. With the Jan. 17 win over Clemson, Steve Forbes has defeated every ACC team at least once in less than three seasons.
