Deacs to Take On Top-Seeded Tar Heels in Quarterfinal Round of 2023 ACC Women’s Tennis Championships

4/20/2023 4:14:00 PM | Women's Tennis

Friday morning will feature a Big Four meeting in Cary.

CARY, N.C. – Checking off its first day of the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Women's Tennis Championships, No. 9-seeded Wake Forest (17-12) has advanced to the event's quarterfinal section, primed to face No. 1-seeded North Carolina on Friday morning (April 21) at 10 a.m. ET. in the Cary Tennis Park (Cary, North Carolina).

Fans can follow along with the action through live streaming and live stats displayed on the league's website.

The Tar Heels went undefeated during the regular season (27-0) while holding the top spot of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings.

Friday will mark the third meeting between Wake Forest and North Carolina in the conference tournament within the last six seasons. Earlier this month, the Deacs suffered a road loss to the Tar Heels (April 8).

Last Time Out

In their first test of the ACC Championships, the Demon Deacons bounced back from a loss in doubles to knock off No. 8-seeded Notre Dame through singles wins, 4-2, in the second round.

It was the first time this spring that Wake Forest finished victorious in a match after dropping the doubles point.

Freshman Nevena Carton played as a clutch factor for her Deacs, forcing a third set in singles before ultimately clinching the match point. Not long before the deciding play, her classmate, Whitley Pate, moved Wake Forest ahead in the contest with a sixth-singles victory. Casie Wooten and Brooke Killingsworth added solo wins of their own during the afternoon.

Wake Forest has now won its first matchup of ACC tournament in each of its last six appearances, dating back to 2015-16. The tournament did not take place in 2020 due to the suspension of the postseason.

The Event

A total of eight matchups are slated to take place Thursday through Friday (April 20-21) in the ACC Championships' second rounds and quarterfinals before Saturday (April 22) features the semifinal section. The tournament championship will headline Sunday morning (April 23) at 10 a.m. ET.

Single day tickets are priced at $10 for adults (ages 18 and older; children under 9 and ACC students get in free with school ID) and $7 for youth ages 17 and under. A full championship pass for all five days is priced at $25. Tickets may be purchased online at https://www.etix.com/ticket/v/11254. All seating for the tournament is general admission.
