The senior duo will use their extra season awarded by the NCAA due to the COVID shortened 2020-21 season.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest women's basketball seniors Kaia Harrison and Alexandria Scruggs announced their decision to return to the team for a fifth season Tuesday.
The senior duo elected to use their extra season awarded by the NCAA due to the COVID shortened 2020-21 season.
With their return, the Demon Deacons will have one of the most veteran teams in the ACC with eight players going into their junior, senior or fifth-year seasons. This means the Deacs will return 81.2 percent of their scoring, 76.8 percent of their rebounds, 77.5 percent of their assists and 85.5 percent of their steals for the second season under head coach Megan Gebbia.
During their four seasons at Wake Forest, Harrison and Scruggs have been a major piece to Wake Forest's postseason success.
Three times in the last four years, the Demon Deacons have reached the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament as Harrison and Scruggs have led the Deacs to an impressive 6-4 record during their time at Wake Forest. They have helped Wake Forest grab two wins at the ACC Tournament in 2020 and 2023, matching the most wins in the tournament in program history. Additionally in three of the last four seasons, Wake Forest has been the highest seed left in the tournament. The Deacs are the only double-digit seed to make the quarterfinal round twice in the last four years and only one other school has done so once.
In addition to Harrison and Scruggs leading the Deacs to success in Greensboro, Wake Forest has also been postseason eligible all four seasons that they have been on campus. The Demon Deacons streak of three consecutive years of playing in a postseason tournament is the longest in program history and they likely would have had a four-consecutive year run, but the 2019-20 postseason was canceled due to COVID.
Harrison is coming off her best season in Wake Forest, averaging career-highs in points, rebounds, assists, field goals made, free throws made, steals and blocks. Scruggs totaled career-bests in points, rebounds, steals, blocks and field goals made during her first season under head coach Megan Gebbia.
