Wake Forest Set for Fifth Consecutive Championship

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Wake Forest women's golf team will begin championship play for the fifth consecutive season and 29th time in program history Friday at Grayhawk Golf Club. The full championship will be played Friday, May 19-Wednesday, May 24.

The Demon Deacons are coming off a third-place finish at the Raleigh Regional last week to advance to the NCAA Championship for the 29th time in program history. Wake Forest was one of just three teams to have an under-par round on the final day, with a one-under 287. First-place finisher Arizona went seven under and fourth-place finisher TCU went two under par.

Wake was second in scoring on par four and par five holes, going four under on the par fives. The team also had the second-most pars in the field with 191 to Arizona's 196. Graduate Emilia Migliaccio finished second in scoring on par fours, going four under. Senior Lauren Walsh was one of just six players in the 60-player field to record an eagle.

The Deacs won a record-breaking five regular season titles during the 2022-23 season and had all five lineup players earn All-ACC recognition. Senior Rachel Kuehn became the first Wake Forest women's golfer to be a two-time ACC Player of the Year last week when she was announced as the ACC Player of the Year for the second year in a row. She is just the sixth ACC women's golfer to win the award in back-to-back seasons.

Along with Kuehn, Emilia Migliaccio, Lauren Walsh, Carolina Chacarra and Mimi Rhodes all earned a spot on the All-ACC Team. This marks the first time in program history that all five lineup players have earned All-League honors, with the first time coming last year at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season. Kuehn, Migliaccio and Walsh are all now three-time All-ACC honorees and Chacarra and Rhodes are two-time honorees, along with Chacarra being named the ACC Freshman of the Year at the conclusion of the 2021-22 campaign.

Most recently, Kuehn was named a finalist for the ANNIKA Award presented by Stifel, and Keuhn, Migliaccio and Walsh were selected to participate in the 2023 Arnold Palmer Cup. Migliaccio is now a five-time participant, with Kuehn making it four times and this being Walsh's second appearance.

Coach's Comments
"The course is in great shape; the rough is thick so driving will be at a premium this week. As long as we stay in the fairway, we'll have lots of birdie chances, but par is still a good score on this course. We had a good practice yesterday and a solid practice round today, so if we play the right way, we will have a great week.

Everyone got in some practice last week and worked on some technical parts of their games and everyone's games look good, but it's a long week, so we're going to take it one round at a time." – associate head coach Ryan Potter

Course Information
  • Grayhawk Golf Club, Raptor Course – Scottsdale, Arizona
  • Par 72 – 6,384 yards
  • The Tom Fazio-designed Raptor course offers thrilling challenges that command players' respect through a high-stakes game of risk and reward. Stretching 7,151 yards from the back tees, the par-72 course unfolds over the gentle hills and across shaded natural arroyos found in this picturesque corner of the Sonoran Desert.
Most of Raptor's fairways are generous, and the greens are large with sweeping undulations. Misses tend to find deep greenside bunkers and grass collection areas, making the scramble to get up and down a true test of the short game.

Raptor is considered to be one of the finest courses in Scottsdale and is listed among the best public golf courses in Arizona by Golfweek and Golf Magazine. Raptor is one of only two Scottsdale golf courses to host a PGA TOUR event – the Frys.com Open 2007-2009. Other tour-sanctioned tournaments include the inaugural Williams World Challenge, Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf and Waste Management Phoenix Open Pro Ams.

Format
Finals play for the championship consists of three days of stroke play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (54 holes), after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals on non-advancing teams will be determined. That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play as well as the 72-hole individual champion. The team national champion will be determined by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals conducted on Tuesday, followed by the finals on Wednesday. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat and a full recap with results following each day's play will be posted on GoDeacs.com.
