Wake Forest Falls to No. 7 Iowa in Season Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 12 Wake Forest field hockey team fell 4-0 against No. 7 Iowa in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge opener Friday evening inside Karen Shelton Stadium.

Trailing by one goal at the half, the Demon Deacons came out in the third quarter for a corner just two minutes in. Taken by senior Grace Delmotte, the corner resulted in back-to-back shot attempts by freshman Faye Janse and graduate Nat Friedman.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ellie Todd recorded three saves by the end of the third and started the final quarter with three saves in a row in the 47th minute. Iowa started the period with a corner which resulted in two saves by Todd, then a second corner for Iowa gave Todd her third save of the quarter and sixth of the game.

With eight minutes left in the game, transfer goalkeeper Jodie Brine made her first appearance for the Deacs and, thanks to the Wake Forest defense, did not record a save.

Sophomore Amelia Frey and Janse each got shots off before the end of the game. Janse's second shot came again off a corner inserted by Delmotte and hit the right post before going out of bounds.
