
No. 12 Demon Deacons Open Season in ACC/BIG Ten Challenge

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The preseason No. 12 Wake Forest field hockey team will open the 2023 regular season this weekend in Chapel Hill for the ACC/BIG Ten Challenge, hosted by No. 1 North Carolina.
On Friday, the Deacs will take on No. 4 Iowa at 6 p.m. on ACC Network. Sunday's 10:30 a.m. matchup against No. 7 Michigan will stream live on ACC Network Extra. Both games will be held at North Carolina's Karen Shelton Stadium.

- Head coach Jen Averill enters her 32nd season at the helm of the Wake Forest field hockey program, amassing an overall record of 411-224-3 as a Demon Deacon and an overall mark of 431-256-6 in 32 years of coaching. Averill agreed to a long-term contract extension this past summer to continue coaching Wake Forest for many years to come.
- Wake Forest returns 14 players from last year's 2022 squad and welcomes nine freshmen and one transfer to the program. The returners made 205 appearances last season, six of which appeared in all 21 matches.
- Sophomore Ellie Todd has been named to the 2023 USA Junior World Cup U21 Team. The Junior World Cup is set to take place November 29 through December 10 at the newly renovated National Stadium Sports Park in Santiago, Chile. During her breakout freshman season, Todd earned second team All-ACC honors and was also selected to join the 2023 U.S. Field Hockey Junior Pan-American Championship roster in April. The Boston Mass. Native notched a 14-5 record with 52 saves and only allowed 22 goals (1.30 goals per game). Todd came in third in the ACC in saves and posted 6 shutouts during her freshman season.
- Anastasia Franco, Mia Schoenbeck, and Ava Moore were also representing Wake Forest on the 2023 USA Junior World Cup U21 team. These athletes were selected through their performance at the 2023 U-21 Junior and Senior Nexus Championship, presented by Osaka Hockey. All current U.S. Women's National Team athletes that remain eligible for U-21 competition in 2024 have been included in this group. Franco, Shoenbeck, and Moore will make their freshman debut this season prior to the JWC.
