Coach Wyshner, Women’s Tennis Release 2024 Spring Schedule
9/13/2023 10:08:00 AM | Women's Tennis
Dual competition is lined up for the Deacs.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nearing mid-September and the start of its fall slate, Wake Forest women's tennis has released dates of competition for its 2024 spring schedule, announced by head coach Jeff Wyshner on Wednesday (Sept. 13).
"We are really excited about our spring 2024 schedule," said Coach Wyshner. "We play several familiar but very good top-35 opponents in Tennessee, Old Dominion, South Carolina and whomever we get matched up with at Blue Gray. Plus, we'll have an interesting early-season test in Gainesville, which is a school that I've never visited as a coach and Wake hasn't been to in probably 20-plus years, so that will be a great January trip. The ACC schedule will be grueling and incredibly challenging, but that's what helps the ACC do so well when we get to the postseason. Hopefully, we'll be able to take advantage of the schedule to keep getting better throughout the semester. We'll have an interesting mix of four seniors/grad students and six freshmen/sophomores, so the upperclassmen will have to help the younger players figure it out as we go as well."
An annual weekend trip to Columbia for the University of South Carolina Hidden Duals is up first for the Demon Deacons, as team members will have the opportunity to compete in various singles and doubles matchups (Jan. 13-15).
A week later, Wake Forest returns to Knoxville for the first time since its 2023 NCAA Tournament appearance, taking on the host Vols and Bellarmine. Action will ramp up for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend (Jan. 27-28), held this year on the grounds of the University of Florida, and beginning with a test versus San Diego.
February opens in the neighboring state for the Deacs, visiting Old Dominion (Feb. 3) for a doubleheader showing against the host Monarchs and Norfolk State. Those who qualify will have the chance to partake in the ITA National Indoors weekend soon afterward (Feb. 9-11).
Wake Forest is set to hold its home opener on Feb. 17, bringing in South Carolina and Campbell. A trip to Montgomery, Alabama for the 76th annual Blue Gray Classic will next take place, as the Deacons step in as the reigning champions after taking home the team title a year ago.
March 1 includes the start of Atlantic Coast Conference competition, with home contests against Louisville and Notre Dame lined up for the first weekend. Wake Forest makes the in-state trip to Raleigh for its first Big Four tilt, facing NC State, on March 8 before another Sunday doubleheader on the road (March 10), matching up with Furman and Western Carolina in North Greenville.
Conference play continues in a week spent traveling (March 15-17), with visits to Boston College and Syracuse. The Deacs will hold their final regular-season doubleheader at home on March 22, hosting the Duke Blue Devils and in-state foe Elon University. Less than 48 hours later, another Big Four foe comes to Winston-Salem: preseason No. 1-ranked North Carolina.
Easter Weekend includes another pair of road matches, at Virginia Tech and Virginia on March 29 and 31, respectively. Through the first two weeks of April, Wake Forest will split time at home and out of state, suiting up against Florida State, Miami, Clemson and Georgia Tech to wrap regular-season competition.
The ACC Championships will again be held in the nearby town of Cary, North Carolina, this year, scheduled for April 17-21.
Wake Forest returns seven members within its 10-player roster crew and is led by a senior trio of Mia Ahmad, Brooke Killingsworth, and Casie Wooten. Krystal Blanch, Nevena Carton, Jingyi Li and Whitley Pate compose a group of four in the Deacons' sophomore class. Newcomers involve Vanderbilt transfer Marcella Cruz and a freshmen pairing of Sankavi Gownder and Aubrey Nisbet.
